RESOLUTION NO. 5703
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA
URGING RECONSIDERATION OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
REGARDING MID -YEAR SALARY ADJUSTMENTS FOR PERSONNEL
OF THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT AND COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT.
WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County has
indicated its intention to grant mid -year salary adjustments of 11
percent to personnel of the Sheriff's Department and County Fire
Department; and
WHEREAS, such an action, whether in the amount of 521 percent
or 11 percent, clearly involves procedures that are at variance
with the established employer-employee relations policy of the
County of Los Angeles; and
WHEREAS, the Azusa City Council, acting on behalf of its
citizens in their role as County taxpayers who must pay the costs
thus incurred for the Sheriff's Department; and
WHEREAS, the effects of such a salary increase, added to the
authorized last July and that which will certainly follow next
July, are profoundly felt by those cities having their own police
and fire departments by virtue of compounding the already steep
inflationary spiral of public safety salaries; and
WHEREAS, the impact of such a salary increase will inevitably
be felt among employee classes outside the public safety series,
thus driving up the cost of government at an ever steeper angle;
and
WHEREAS, such mid -year action will have serious adverse
effect on the County employer-employee relations policy, which again
is likely to be reflected in the tactics of employee groups through-
out Los Angeles County; and
WHEREAS, no justifiable reasons for such action have been
demonstrated; and
WHEREAS, these are times demanding economy in government and
the most careful stewardship of the public's already overtaxed
resources;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of
Azusa urges the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County to re-
consider its action with respect to mid -year salary adjustments,
adhere to its established employer-employee relations policy, and
provide such fair and equitable salaries for the employees of the
County of Los Angeles as are indicated by established procedures.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVES, that a copy of this resolution be
sent to the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles.
The City Clerk shall certify to the passage and adoption of
this resolution.
Adopted and approved this 6th day of April, 1970.
