HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 5878• RESOLUTION N0. 5878 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA CONDEMNING THE UNRESPONSIBLE ACTIONS OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF THE COUNTY OF IAS ANGELES IN GRANTING UNREALISTIC PAY RAISES TO COUNTY SHERIFF AND FIRE PERSONNEL. WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles has recently granted pay raises ranging from eleven to sixteen percent to Sheriff and Fire personnel of the County of Los Angeles despite the fact that the cost of living has only increased 3.77% between the month of May, 1970 and the month of May, 1971, and WHEREAS, the rates of pay established by the Board of Supervisors for Sheriff and Fire personnel are higher than those of every City in the County, including the City of Los Angeles, and are higher than are required by any provision of the Charter of the County of Los Angeles, and WHEREAS, the excessive increases in pay approved for County Sheriff and Fire personnel mean that Cities within the County are whip -sawed in wage negotiations with their Police and Fire employees and has contributed to substantially increased wage demands by City Police and Fire employees, and WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors by its unresponsible action is fostering and encouraging the destruction of City Police and Fire Departments and an over-all reduction in the quality of law enforcement and fire control services, and WHEREAS, City taxpayers pay for the support of the Sheriff's office and also pay for the support of the City Police Department and unjustifiable salary increases at the County level compound the burden of all property taxpayers; NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Azusa as follows: SECTION 1. The Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles is hereby condemned for its irresponsible action in approving unrealistic and enhorbitant pay increases for County Sheriff and Fire personnel. SECTION 2. The Board of Supervisors is requested to take whatever action -is necessary to stop the wage spiral and to equalize salaries paid by the County to Sheriff and Fire personnel with salaries paid by the Cities in the County to such personnel including the submission to the electors of the County of any amendments to the County Charter that may be required. SECTION 3. The Board of Supervisors is also requested to discontinue all efforts to encourage or promote the establishment of a County -wide system of law enforcement and fire protection. SECTION 4. The City Clerk shall send copies of this resolution to the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County and to the City Clerk of every City in the County. SECTION 5. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this resolution. Adopted and approved this 19th day of July , 1971.
