RESOLUTION NO. 6397
1]
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF AZUSA OPPOSING PASSAGE OF THE NUCLEAR
POWER INITIATIVE.
WHEREAS, the voters of California will be confronted
June 8th, with an initiative measure which, if enacted, could
seriously or even completely curtail the generation of nuclear
power in California; and
WHEREAS, the people of California are economically
and physically dependent upon the availability of electric power,
including energy to pump water through California's major water
transference facilities; and
WHEREAS, it appears that such adequate electrical power
cannot be made available over the next decade without a substantial
contribution generated by nuclear power; and
WHEREAS, the cost of electricity is likely to increase
substantially to the City of Azusa and to its residents if this
initiative measure passes and nuclear power production is so
restricted; and
WHEREAS, the other potential costs of the initiative's
enactment apparently include increased air pollution, aggravation
of the already critical petroleum situation, economic and employment
setbacks and a new state bureaucracy of up to 500 persons needed
to carry out the provisions of the initiative,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF AZUSA, that it opposes the passage of the Nuclear
Initiative for the reasons above stated.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council and staff
of this City lend their efforts in every legitimate way to making
the people aware of the potentially enormous costs of this measure.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk of the City
of Azusa transmit copies of this Resolution forthwith to other
concerned public agencies and to appropriate media representatives.
Adopted and approved this 19th day of April, 1976.
