Present at roll call: Councilmen: v Strohmeier, McIntire, Arnold, Chester, Carr and City Clerk. Absent: City Attorney. The minutes of the last regular meeting of August 17, 1936 were read and approved as read. A card from City Attroney Miller was read and ordered placed on file. A communication from Ed S. Gillette, Mayor of Santa Monica, relative to the League of California Municipalities Con- vention, was read and ordered placed on file. Moved and carried that the City Clerk be instructed and authorized to order a telephone installed for Councilman Strohmeier. A communication from William King of the Los Angeles Police Department, commend- ing the work of the Azusa Police Depart- ment was read and ordered placed on file. A communication from Cornelius Smith relative to pepper trees on Foothill Boulevard was read. Moved and carried that the Superintendent of Streets be instructed to trim the trees in front of Mrs. De Puyts property. A communication from Paul E. Kressly commending the Street Superintendent's work on Azusa Avenue, was read and ordered placed on file. A written request from T. L. Munson, City Treasurer, for the installation of a counter in his office was offered. Moved by Councilman McIntire, seconded by Councilman Arnold that this matter be referred to the Board of Public Works, with power to act. Carried by the following vote of the Council: Ayes: Councilmen: Strohmeier, McIntire, Arnold, Chester, Carr. Noes: None. Absent: None. Councilman Chester offered a Resolution entitled: A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNO:L OF THE CITY OF AZUSA, LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CAL- IFORNIA, LEVYING TAXES AND FIXING THE TAX RATE OF ALL PROPERTY IN SAID CITY FOR ALL MUNIdIPAL PURPbSES AND TO PAY THE BONDED INDEBTEDNESS THEREOF AND INTEREST ON THE SAME FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 1936-1937. Moved by Councilman Arnold, seconded by Councilman McIntire -that this Resolution be acb pted as read and numbered Resolution No. 1506. 1936. 7:30 P. M. Roll call. Minutes approved. Correspondence filed. City Clerk in- structed to order a telephone for Councilman Strohmeier. Communication read and ordered placed on file. Street Superinten- dent instructed to trim pepper trees. Police Officer Smith reported on the Business Licenses collected to date. Arthur Wolfe and A. N. Downing re- quested two weeks vacation, beginning September 14, 1936. Moved by Councilman Chester, seconded by Councilman Strohmeier that same be grant- ed, with pay. Moved by Councilman Chester, seconded by Councilman Arnold that the following business men be awarded the Cityfs business for the month of September: Doctor - Dr. Wheatley First Aid, Etc. - Foothill Drug Store Garage - Singleton's Garage Grease Jobs - Skidmore (Union) Hardware - Morgan Hardware Lumber - Williams Lumber Yard Restaurant - J. The City Clerk announced that she had received three sealed bids in response to the notice calling for a 6 cylinder pickup truck and a 6 cylinder sedan. Moved by Councilman Chester, seconded by Councilman Arnold that the bids be now opened, examined and publicly de- clared. Carried by the following vote of the Council: Ayes: Councilmen: Strohmeisr, McIntire, Arnold, Chester, Carr. Noes: None. Absent: None. Elsbery Reynolds, Jr., Inc. Report on business licenses. Moved by Councilman Chester, seconded by Councilman Carr that the City Clerk be instructed to return the checks accompany- ing the bids, to the bidders. Moved and carried that Lee Rhodes, Captain of the Police Department, be instructed ' to purchase paint and have the school and traffic zones repainted. Mr. Nathan, representing Azusa Merchants, appeared before the Council and requested permission to rope off Azusa Avenue be- tween Foothill Boulevard and Eighth Street dn-the-night of September 16, 19369 for a Mexican Street Carnival. Moved by Councilman Chester, seconded by Councilman Strohmeier that permission be granted Mr. Nathan and the merchants he represents to rope off. Mayor Pro tem Carr gave a verbal report Report on Pete's on the store called Pete's Place, located Place. on the South Side of Foothill Boulevard between Angeleno and Sunset Avenues, quoting Mr. Pinkstaff and his objections to this place of business. ,No action taken. Moved by Councilman Chester, seconded by Councilman Carr Councilman Arnold that Councilman Carr appointed Mayor. be appointed Chairman of the City Council and Mayor of the City of Azusa.
