HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 7268r RESOLUTION NO. 7268 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA AMENDING THE JOB SPECIFICATIONS FOR POLICE OFFICER THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. The job specifications for the classifi- cation of Police Officer are hereby amended to read in accordance with Exhibit A attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference. SECTION 2. This Resolution shall become effective immediately. SECTION 3. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution. ADOPTED AND APPROVED THIS 6th day of June, 1983.. Representative Duties As assigned to Patrol as a patrol officer, operates an automobile in patrolling an assigned area for the prevention of crime and the enforcement of laws and regulations; responds to radio messages or telephone instructions and appears at scenes of disaster or crime; notes and reports traffic hazards; investigates and prepares reports on accidents, offenses, and damages to property; gives direction and information; makes arrests; issues citations; gives verbal warnings; prepares reports on arrests and property impounded; directs traffic; intervenes in private or public disputes to protect the public and maintain order; appears in court, whether on or off duty, as the arresting officer; transports prisoners; investigates complaints; interrogates persons whose actions are suspicious; writes case reports on a log of activities; occasionally relieves a superior officer or acts for him; serves on the desk, answering telephones, taking complaints, and operating a radio telephone in dispatching police personnel; fingerprints prisoners, applicants, and salesmen; takes photographs of prisoners;.accepts bail and gives receipts. As assigned as a motorcycle officer, may be assigned to per- form specialized traffic enforcement throughout the city; conduct traffic safety seminars and presentations with schools and community groups; conduct traffic investigations as a result of collisions; establish a report review process that will include the identification of high traffic accident frequency locations, traffic accident primary causation factors, both by location and by accidents in general; establish a traffic citation review process that will include the identification of the nature of violations cited at high traffic accident frequency locations and the types of violations cited in general; establish priorities for enforcement for both long-term and short-term selective enforcement; develop in-service training programs to be presented at roll call briefing sessions and through utilization of department training manuals. In addition, motorcycle patrol officers may be required to per- form the same functions as a patrol officer as outlined above. 0 0 POLICE OFFICER - Page 3 Minimum Phvsical Requirements 1. Height -Weight Relationship: There are no minimum or maximum height requirements, but the height-weight relationship for each applicant must either (1) fall within the ranges in the following table, or (2) if the applicant's height is not included in the table, be found to be acceptable after individual evaluation. Height measurements are made without shoes, and weight measurements without shoes and coat. Applicants whose height falls between any of the measurements shown on the table must meet the weight requirements of the lower height. Minimum age: 21 years at time of appointment. 3. Hearing: Ability to pass a closed booth audiogram examination at a minimum of 25 decibels and discern a whisper at 15 feet. 4. Vision: Normal visual function and acuity, not less than 20/70 in each eye without correction and corrected to 20/20 in each eye with normal color vision. Citizenship Requirement Must fulfill the United States citizen requirements for Police Officer in accordance with Section 1031.5 of the Government Code. Licenses Valid California Driver's License. Must be free from felony convictions. 0 0 POLICE OFFICER - Page 2 As assigned to the Detective Bureau, receives assignments to investigate violations of state and local laws; collects and preserves evidence; apprehends and arrests law violators; reviews general police bulletins; makes reports of cases handled and action taken; interrogates witnesses and prisoners; appears in court and presents evidence. May be required to develop crime prevention programs and appear at public meetings or schools to give presentations. As assigned as a corporal in the Patrol Bureau, patrols an assigned beat; arrests law violators; collects and preserves evidence; conducts personnel background investigations; may act as a training officer for new recruits; prepares and presents talks to schools, service groups, etc.; relieves a superior officer as the person in charge of the shift and acts for the supervisor on individual calls requiring super- visory attention and control. Organizational Responsibilities Police officer is the entering level class in the Police Depart- ment and may be assigned to the Patrol, Detective, or Services Division. QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE Training and Experience Successful completion of the required four-year high school curriculum resulting in high school graduation, and the equivalency of 15 college semester units. After appointment an employee should be willing to attend college -level classes in police science and related fields during off hours in order to qualify and meet the require- ments for advancement. Employees are required to success- fully complete an approved POST academy. Knowledge and Abilities A high degree of general intelligence, verbal facility, memory, and adaptability are required of all police officers. Ability to understand departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws, regulations, and police literature, together with an aptitude for law enforcement work; analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective, and reasonable course of action; write clear and accurate reports; use good English and a good vocabulary; understand and follow oral directions; learn the use and care of automobiles and small firearms; meet weight, height, and other physical endurance and agility requirements. Keen observation and ability to remember names, faces, and details of incidents.
