A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF AZUSA URGING PRESIDENT
REAGAN TO TAKE ACTION TO OBTAIN RELEASE OF
AMERICAN HOSTAGE REVEREND BENJAMIN WEIR.
WHEREAS, on May 8, 1984, in Beirut, Lebanon, Reverend Benjamin
Weir, an American Missionary in Beirut for thirty-two years,
was kidnapped by, it is believed, the moslem terrorist group,
Islamic Jihad, and
WHEREAS, it is felt by his family, friends and officials
of the Presbyterian Church, that he is alive because of
two letters received from him in late February, 1985, urging
the United States Government to take strong and effective action
to secure his release, and
WHEREAS, to be an American abroad is fast becoming
a hazardous undertaking. Other than for us all to stay at
home in a rapidly shrinking world, something almost impossible
to accomplish, if we are to interact globally with others in
the performance of our various pursuits, we must perforce risk
life and limb, and
WHEREAS, what is required is a coordinated and effective
procedure by our National Government to deal with terrorist
activity when and where it occurs; in this instance, the release
from captivity of Reverend BENJAMIN WEIR must serve as the
first use of such a procedure; there can be no vacillation
or alternative;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF AZUSA, reflecting widespread concurrence, vigorously
urges our President, Ronald Reagan, to use all the power of
his office to effect the release of Reverend BENJAMIN WEIR
from his onerous captivity as soon as possible; considering
that a whole year has elapsed, surely, time is of the
essence.
ADOPTED AND APPROVED this 20th day of May, 1985.
