A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF AZUSA ENDORSING AUGMENTATION BUDGET FOR
CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGES.
WHEREAS, California's 106 community colleges are
dedicated to the needs of local citizens, and
WHEREAS, the California community colleges serve the
residents of the state with a wide variety of educational services,
and
WHEREAS, California's community colleges stress an
"open door" policy of equal access to all persons, low-cost
educational opportunities for lifelong learning through a wide
spectrum of programs and courses, and
WHEREAS, California's community colleges offer programs
for citizens (1) planning to transfer to four-year colleges or
universities, (2) seeking skills for initial employment, upgrading
or retraining. (3) desiring developmental education, and (4)
seeking personal growth, and
WHEREAS, California's community colleges have taken
a leadership role in developing programs and services for students
with special needs, such as the disadvantaged, re-entry students,
more than 55,000 disabled students, student parents, members
of ethnic minorities, senior citizens, working students, and
those needing developmental education, and
WHEREAS, California's community colleges have had and
continue to have a highly beneficial impact on the state's economy
by producing graduates with salable skills who become productive
taxpayers, plus adding employee salaries and the purchase of
goods and services to the economy, and
WHEREAS, nearly 60 percent of those enrolled in community
colleges do so for vocational training to improve existing job
skills or re-train for new jobs, and
WHEREAS, over 1.3 million people attend California
community colleges, and
WHEREAS, nearly 15 percent of adult basic education
programs are housed in the California Community College System,
and
WHEREAS, California's community colleges are dedicated
to the principle that our society will benefit when all persons
have an opportunity for lifetime learning and an improved quality
of life;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF AZUSA fully endorses an augmentation budget request
of $182 million for California Community Colleges to provide
adequate basic support and to provide quality instructional
programs with necessary equipment and student services to make
certain these programs are educationally sound and working
efficiently.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was
duly adopted by the City Council of the City of Azusa at a regular
meeting thereof, held on the 20th day of May, 1985, by the
followiing vote of the Council:
