HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - May 3, 1937 - CCCITY HALL, AZUSA, CALIFORNIA. MAY 3, 1937. The City Council of the City of Azusa met in regular session at the above time and place. Present at roll call: Councilmen: Strohmeier, Arnold, Chester, Carr, City Attorney and City Clerk. Absent: Councilman McIntire. The minutes of the last regular meeting of April 19, 1937 were read and approved as read. A request to operate a hog ranch in the City of Azusa, offered by Fred Bohm, was read. Mr. Bohm addressed the Council relative to the construction and maintenance of the ranch. 125 7:30 P. M. Moved by Councilman Arnold, seconded by Councilman Strohmeier that this matter be referred to the Planning Commission to report back at the next regular meeting of the Council: Carried by the following vote of the Council: Ayes: Councilmen: Strohmeier, Arnold, Chester, Carr. Noes: None. Absent: Councilman McIntire. Roll call. Minutes approved. Request to operate a hog ranch re- ferred to the Planning Commission_ League of California Municipalities Bulletin Communications #11, a communication from the Department of read and ordered Parks, a communication from Chief Engineer placed on file. R. J. Scott and one from Roger Dalton and Cornelius Smith were read and ordered placed on file. A communication, signed by Mrs. W. N. Joles, City Clerk instruct Secretary of the Local Woments Christian ed to write Mrs. Temperance Union, requesting the Council to Joles. prohibit the sale of liquor on Saturday, May 1, 1937, was read. Moved by Councilman Arnold, seconded by Councilman Chester that the City Clerk be instructed to write Mrs. Joles explaining to her that the Council have no control over the sale of liquor. Carried by the following vote of the Council: Ayes: Councilmen: Strohmeier, Arnold, Chester, Carr. Noes: None. Absent: Councilman McIntire. A copy of a letter addressed to Supervisor Communication Legg, signed by C. H. Howell, Chief Engineer signed by C. H. of the Los Angeles County Flood Control, Howell, relative relative to the replacement of a bridge on to bridge on First First Street over Little Dalton Wash, was Street read and read, ordered placed on file. Councilman Chester reported on his investi- gation of this project. He was informed that work would be started soon on the channel. Moved and carried that this information be accepted and placed on file. Councilman Chester offered a Resolution entitled: 126 MINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL: MAY 3, 1937. 7:30 P. M. A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA AUTHORIZING AND DIRECTING THE MAYOR AND CITY CLERK OF SAID CITY TO EXECUTE A CERTAIN MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT i4ITH THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA RESPECTING THE EXPENDITURE OF 1/4 CENT GAS TAX ON STREETS OF MAJOR IMPORT- ANCE WITHIN SAID CITY OF AZUSA. Ivfoved by Councilman Arnold, seconded by Councilman Chester that this Resolution be ' adopted as read and numbered Resolution No. 1524. Carried by the following vote of the Council: Ayes: Councilmen: Strohmeier, Arnold, Chester, Carr. Noes: None. Absent: Councilman McIntire. Moved by Councilman Strohmeier, seconded by Councilman Arnold that the following business men be awarded the City business for the month of May. Meier Garage Grease Jobs - Richfield ( Pettyjohn ) Hardware - Morgan Hardware Restaurant - Malt Shop Lumber - Williams Lumber Yard Tires - C. H. Howard Carried by the following vote of the Council: Ayes: Councilmen: Strohmeier, Arnold, Chester, Carr. Noes: None. Absent: Councilman McIntire. Councilman Strohmeier reported on the matter of purchasing the property owned by Antonio Nunez, situated south of the Pacific Electric tracks, stating that he paid Mr. Nunez $50. for a ninth day option on the property with the understanding that the City may have the privilege of purchasing same for $600; Mr. Nunez to pay all delinquent taxes and the City of Azusa to bring dorm the title. Councilman Arnold offered a Resolution entitled: A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA DECLARING THE OFFICE OF CHIEF OF POLICE VACANT; EMPLOYING S. C. BIERBOWER AS PATROLMAN AND FIXING HIS COMPENSATION. Moved by Councilman Arnold, seconded by Councilman Strohmeier that this Resolution be adopted as read. This Resolution failed to carry by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen: Strohmeier, Arnold, Noes: Councilmen: Chester, Carr. Absent: Councilman McIntire. ' Councilman Strohmeier offered an Ordinance entitled: AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF AZUSA LICENSING FOR THE PURPOSE OF REVENUE AND REGULATION, ALL AND EACH KIND OF BUSINESS CARRIED ON IN SAID CITY; PRESCRIBING THE PENALTY FOR VIOLATIONS OF THIS ORDINANCE, AND REPEALING AS OF JULY 1, 1937, ORDINANCE NO. 2842 ORDINANCE 290, ORDINANCE NO. 310, ORDINANCE NO. 315 AND ALL OTHER ORDINANCES OR PARTS OF ORDINANCES INSOFAR ONLY AS ANY OF THE PROVISIONS OF SAME CONFLICT HEREWITH. to be read for the first time. 127 RESOLUTION NO. 1524 ADOPTED Local business men awarded City business. Councilman Strohmeier report- ed on option to purchase property owned by A. Nunez. RESOLUTION OFFERED. ORDINANCE read for the first time. 128 11 11 MINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL. MAY 39 1937. This Ordinance was then read. Chief Rogers addressed the Council request- ing one more Volunteer Fireman be appointed and recommended Stanley McCauslin. Moved and carried that the Chief of the Fire Department be authorized to appoint Stanley McCauslin as a Volunteer Fireman. Carried by the following vote of the Council: Ayes: Councilmen: Strohmeier, Arnold, Chester, Carr. Noes: None. Absent: Councilman McIntire. 129 7:30 P. M. Chief Rogers re- quested that one more man be appoint- ed to serve as Volunteer Fireman. Stanley McCauslin appointed Volunteer Fireman.
