HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 82090 0 RESOLUTION NO. 8209 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA URGING RESCISSION OF PROPOSED SENATE BILL 624. WHEREAS, Assembly Bill 503, enacted on February 25, 1985, permits 58 by weight of alcohol in confectionery products. This 58 content will now be limited to 28 by proposed Senate Bill 624. A move which, besides being an arbitrary adjustment, is causing the confectionery industry a great loss in view of the fact that other States and foreign competition are permitted the greater content. This simply does not permit local industries to compete, and WHEREAS, the assumption that candy is solely for children is not a valid argument. Adults, also, consume these confections. The premise that children would be exposed to these confections is also invalid, as their exposure is governed by parental discretion rather than packaging. The same argument holds true for the sale of alcoholic beverages which is permitted, and WHEREAS, Azusa's local confectionery will be caused great discomfiture from this proposed Bill by possible closure of his business, not to mention loss of employment by local residents and distributors of his products throughout California. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA, strongly urges the State Senate Housing and Human Services Committee to rescind its support of Senate Bill 624 so that the confectioners can continue to do what was originally permitted by Assembly Bill 503. ADOPTED AND APPROVED this 30th day of March, 1987.
