HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 8296RESOLUTION NO. 8296 0 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA REVISING THE CLASS SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF POLICE SERGEANT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. The class specifications for Police Sergeant is revised in its entirety in accordance with Exhibit "A": attached and incorporated herein by reference. ADOPTED AND APPROVED THIS 17th day of August, 1987 4t mei AYOR ° I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was duly adopted by the City Council of the City of Azusa at a regular meeting thereof on the 17th day of August, 1987, by the following vote of Council: AYES: COUNCILMEMBERS: AVILA, CRUZ, LATTA, MOSES NOES: COUNCILMEMBERS: NONE ABSENT: COUNCILMEMBERS: COOK CITY OF AZUSA adopted: POLICE SERGEANT (Exhibit "A") DEFINITION To have responsible charge of police field and/or office operations on an assigned shift; to supervise and personally perform investigation, patrol and administrative duties. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED General supervision is provided by a Police Lieutenant or higher level police management class. Responsibilities include direct supervision of sworn and non -sworn personnel. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: As a Watch Operations Sergeant, to supervise law enforcement and related support activities during an assigned shift. As a Detective Sergeant, supervise and personally conduct complete and detailed investigations of general and specialized crimes; review all investigation reports and make recommendations and suggestions to officers; coordinate investigations involving several officers. Maintain discipline and ensure that department rules and policies are followed. Supervise and assist officers in follow-up investigations including the gathering of evidence, questioning of witnesses, and apprehension of suspects. Participate in all normal shift activities as assigned including enforcing local and state laws; may issue citations, make arrests, and transport prisoners. Supervise and participate in preparation of reports in cases for trial and personally appear in court to present evidence and testimony, as required. Confer with prosecutors and maintain contact with other law enforcement agencies. Supervise the trustee program by screening perspective trustees, scheduling and evaluating their work, and ensuring the necessary supplies and equipment are provided. Review reports submitted by officers. Page 1 of 3 CITY OF AZUSA POLICE SERGEANT (cont.) EXAMPLE OF DUTIES (cont.) Conduct in-service training. Prepare reports of shift activity. Ll May interview victims, complainants, witnesses, and suspects. May prepare investigation reports. May testify and present evidence in court. Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the investigation of crimes and the apprehension of offenders. Supervise booking procedures and record keeping regarding jail prisoners. Respond to citizen complaints and requests for information. May investigate and make recommendations on the disposition of claims and lawsuits against the City. Analyze and synthesize a variety of data concerning departmental activities and prepare reports and statistics. Assist in budget preparation and administration. Supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff. Perform related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Police methods and procedures, including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, investigation and identification techniques, and equipment, jail operations, police records and reports, and first aid techniques. Departmental rules and regulations. Criminal law with particular reference to the apprehension, arrest, and custody of persons committing misdemeanors and felonies, including rules of evidence pertaining to the search and seizure and the preservation of evidence in traffic and criminal cases. Ability to: Supervise, schedule, train, and evaluate subordinates. Gather, assemble, analyze, evaluate and use facts and evidence. Analyze situations and adopt effective courses of action. Interpret and apply laws and regulations. Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Use and care for firearms. Administer first aid. Demonstrate keen powers of observations and memory. Experience and Education Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: Three (3) years of experience at the level of Police Officer. Education: Associate of Arts degree or sixty (60) semester or equivalent quarter units of college level coursework in police science, public administration, or related field License or Certificate Possession of a valid California Driver's License Possession of a P.O.S.T Basic Certificate Page 3 of 3
