A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF AZUSA SUPPORTING PRESIDENT BUSHS
CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT REGARDING THE BURNING
OF THE AMERICAN FLAG
WHEREAS, Americans possess many symbols, both sacred and temporal; but the one
that reigns supreme over almost all, attaining in many ways, a uniquely
sacred and temporal status, is that symbol which represents us and our
country: our flag; that star spangled banner, which, in its stirring
combinations of color and form holds a poignant message for us all.
RED for Courage, WHITE for Purity and BLUE for Loyalty; these colors
communicate to us commitment to this blessed union of States, and
WHEREAS, In this world of madly increasing material values, these colors subtly
tell us what is ideally expected of us when all about us many raise
a cry for what rights are due us, but few remind us of our
responsibilities, and
WHEREAS, Now, perhaps because we have become lax about its proper treatment,
it is being widely used in whatever helter-skelter fashion hucksters,
malcontents and others who have little or no purpose in their lives
other than to satisfy appetites of the moment, deem fit. Perhaps enduring
good will come from the latest outrage: its burning as a protest by
those whose lives would be drastically shortened if they did just that
in those countries whose ideals they so wholeheartedly support and
endorse.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED the City Council of the City of Azusa, does hereby resolve
to join with the multitude of those who call on our national leaders to take immediate action
in order to correct this dismal situation, and restore to our national symbol the dignity
to which it is entitled; further, it urges that it be returned to that place of honor in
which it rightfully belongs, and once there never again be removed, or sullied.
PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED, this 7th day of August, 1989.
