A RESOLUTION OF
AZUSA REVISING
CLASSIFICATION
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
THE CLASS SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE
OF DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA DOES HEREBY RESOLVE
AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The classificiation specifications of Director
of Public Works are hereby amended in its entirety in accordance
with Exhibit A attached and incorporated herein by reference.
ADOPTED AND APPROVED THIS 5th day of March, 1990.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was duly

DEFINITION

Under general direction of the City Administrator, the Director
of Public Works plans, organizes, directs and evaluates all
programs and activities relating to Public Works functions and
field maintenance operations within the Public Works Department;
advises the City Council and administrative officials on Public
Works matters, and assumes and performs related duties as
required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
The Director of Public Works reports to the City Administrator,
and directs the operation of the Public Works Department, which
includes these functions: construction management and
inspection, building repair and cleaning, street and sewer repair
and maintenance, street sweeping, street painting and traffic
signs, and equipment/vehicle maintenance and repair.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Directs and coordinates all Public Works operations in the City.
Advises on major engineering work in progress whether performed
by City forces or private contractors.
Plans long range projects and provides overall direction to the
inspection of Public works projects, the maintenance and
construction of streets, sidewalks, and drainage structures.
Assists in the preparation of and reviews plans, specifications,
estimates, and contracts for major projects of Public Works,
street construction and municipal structures.
Administers and monitors City maintenance contracts.
Advises other Municipal Officials on Public Works proposals.
Directs and conducts studies and prepares reports on proposed
improvements, maintenance, or changes in Public Works.
Directs the keeping of accurate records, maps, field notes, and
memoranda.
Directs and performs research in regard to equipment and
operations employed in Public Works.
Advises on the acceptance of bids and the ordering of supplies
and equipment.

Prepares and coordinates departmental budget estimates.
Reviews divisional operations schedules with regard to budget
balances.
Prepares reports on the progress or completion of Public Works or
maintenance.
Represents the department at meetings, conferences and
conventions.
Trains and evaluates subordinate personnel; authorizes and or
recommends the selection, promotion, training and discipline of
division employees.
Investigates and resolves the more difficult complaints from the
public.
UALIFICATIONS
Knowledae of:
Materials, methods, practices and equipment used in street,
grounds, vehicle, building, storm drain system, maintenance,
construction and repair activities.
Types and level of maintenance and repair activities
generally performed in a Public Works field division
maintenance program.
Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions
necessary in the work.
Geography of the City, including the location of streets and
drainage facilities.
Practical elements of civil engineering as they relate to
street and drainage maintenance and repair.
Principles of organization, administration, budget and
personnel management.
Ability to:
Plan, organize and implement a comprehensive program of
Public Works construction, maintenance and repair work for
street, drain, grounds and building facilities.
Conduct studies, prepare comprehensive reports and determine
cost effective ways for constructing and maintaining street
and drainage, grounds and building facilities.
Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Supervise, train, and evaluate subordinates.
Experience and Education:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that
could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities
would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge
and abilities would be:
Experience:
Five years of supervisory experience in street
maintenance and drainage systems repair, equipment,
grounds and building construction.
Education:
Equivalent to completion of a Bachelor's Degree in
business administration or closely related field,
supplemented with specialized training in civil
engineering and construction related subjects.
Licenses:
Must obtain the State of California Department of Food
and Agriculture Qualified Applicator Certificate,
Category B, within eighteen (18) months of employment
date.
Possession of a valid California Class 3 Driver's License.
