HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 88120 RESOLUTION NO. 8812 0 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA, PROTESTING THE CONTINUED USE OF MALATHION IN THE CURRENT MEDFLY ERADICATION PROGRAM WHEREAS, Over the years, as scientific discoveries came to us at an ever increasing pace, the insatiable demand for more miracle solutions to mankind's afflictions has resulted in a riskier use of chemical compounds before they are thoroughly tested, and WHEREAS, Since the end of World War II, we have been repeatedly assurred by contemporary "experts" that this or that substance is completely safe and poses no threat to our wellbeing. DDT, Agent Orange and Thalidomide were but a few of the wonders extolled by "experts", "experts" who were suddenly silenced when toxic and often gross sideaffects come to light, creating afflictions many times greater than the ills they were supposed to remedy, and WHEREAS, Now we are again solemnly assurred that Malathion is completely safe and poses no threat to our wellbeing. Many believe that the "experts" have finally produced the straw that broke the camel's back. No longer, we hope, are we to be passive in the face of yet another threat to our very lives. Well-qualified professionals in the field are lending their voices to the public outcry against the toxic mist that is encroaching into our already polluted environment. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Azusa, cognizant of this ground swell of public protest, hereby resolves to add its voice in order to convince the powers that be to stop and take stock before proceeding with the caution which should have prevailed before the inception of the current medfly eradication effort. PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED, this 20th day of February, 1990.
