Present at roll call: Councilmen: Owens, Dickerson, Strohmeier, Carr, Arnold, City Attorneys and City Clerk. The minutes of the last regular meeting of May 2, 1938 were read and approved as read. Pdr. Robinson, representing the firm of auditors, Crenshaw, Diehl & Edwards, appeared before the Council. He called the attention of the Council to certain agreements between the City of Azusa and the following named persons: Joseph Haft, J. 0. Durrell, V. M. Greever, P. L. Davis, and C. A. Griffith, relative to the City furnishing the above mentioned persons with free irrigation water. Moved by Councilman Strohmeier, seconded by Councilman Owens that, upon recommendation of the Auditor, the City Attorneys be instructed to check this matter and to inquire into the legality of paying assessments on water stock to the Azusa Agricultural '.,Vater Company, also to secure information as to vihere and when the City of Azusa acquired said stock. Carried by the following vote of the Council: Ayes: Councilmen: Owens, Strohmeier, Dickerson, Arnold, Carr. Noes: None. Absent: None. 11r. Robinson also informed the Council that had written the Maryland Casualty Company asking for the reason why they required the City of Azusa to pay an additional premium Public Liability Policy for the Light and 'Plater Departments, informing them that in comparison with the same type of coverage held by the City of Riverside, the rate is materially lower; he also called their Roll call. Minutes approved. Azusa Agricultural Slater stock referred to City Attorneys. he Auditor reported on Maryland Casualty Company. on attention to the fact that the original policy was computed in error. He stated that up to the present time he had not received a reply. Applications for employment as Life Guard at the Slauson Memorial Pool, were offered by Charles B. Forbes and Dick Davies. Councilman Strohmeier offered a Resolution entitled: A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA, LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, EMPLOYING A LIFE GUARD FOR THE SLAUSON MEMORIAL PLUNGE, DEFINING HIS EMPLOYMENT AND FIXING HIS SALARY. Moved by Councilman Dickerson, seconded by Councilman Strohmeier that this Resolution ' be adopted'as read and numbered Resolution No. 1568. Carried by the following vote of the Council: Ayes: Councilmen: Owens, Dickerson, Strohmeier, Carr, Arnold. Noes: None. Absent: None. Applications for employment in the Police Department were offered by Mervin F. Wren and F. L. Spear. Moved by Councilman Strohmeier, seconded by Councilman Carr that same be placed on file. Carried by the following vote of the Council: Ayes: Councilmen: Owens, Dickerson, Strohmeier, Carr, Arnold. Noes: None. Absent: None. Applications read. RESOLUTION NO. 1568 ADOPTED. Applications read. 418 14IITUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING. 419 -- MAY 162 1938. 7:30 P. M. A communication, signed by C. H. Putnam, President of the Library Board, stating that termites have been located in the east wall of the Library, was read. Moved by Councilman Owens, seconded by Councilman Carr that this matter be referred to the Board of Public Works, with power to act. Carried by the following vote of the Council: Ayes: Councilmen: Ovrens, Dickerson, Strohmeier, Carr, Arnold. Noes: None. Absent: None. A request to use the Auditorium on May 23rd, made by Cornelius Smith, was read. Moved by Councilman Strohmeier, seconded by Councilman Owens that this request be granted providing there are no conflicting dates. Carried by the following vote of the Council: Ayes: Councilmen: Owens, Dickerson, Strohmeier, Carr, Arnold. Noes: None. Absent: None. A request, presented by John mora, to hold Jamaicas at #236 Soldano Avenue, was read and no action taken. A request to use the lights on the Lee School Baseball Diamond, was made by the President of the 20-30 Club. Moved by Councilman Dickerson, seconded by Councilman Strohmeier that this request be granted. Matter of termites referred to Board of Public Works, Request to use Auditorium granted. 20-30 Club granted permission to use lights. Anthony M. Ortuno presented a bill for $16.00 Anthony Ortuno's which he claims represents his loss in business bill denied. during the four days that Azusa Avenue was being re -surfaced. Moved by Councilman Owens, seconded by Councilman Dickerson that this claim be denied. Carried by the following vote of the Council: Ayes: Councilmen: Owens, Dickerson, Strohmeier, Carr, Arnold. Noes: None, Absent: None. Councilman Strohmeier offered a Resolution entitled: A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA, LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, EMPLOYING J. F. STRINGFELLOW AS MANAGER OF THE SLAUSON MEMORIAL PLUNGE AND FIXING HIS SALARY. Moved by Councilman Owens, seconded by Councilman Carr that this Resolution be adopted as read and numbered Resolution No. 1569. The City Clerk presented "Summons" served on her May 16, 1938 relative to the Donald R. Reader case. Councilman Strohmeier offered a Resolution entitled: A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA, LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, RETAINING TSCHARNER & MILLER, CITY ATTORNEYS IN PROCEEDINGS BEFORE RAILROAD COMIMISSION FOR AUTHORITY TO ESTABLISH AN OPEN GRADE CROSSING AT VERNON AVENUE AI?D PACIFIC ELECTRIC TRACKS. Moved by Councilman Owens, seconded by Councilman Carr that this Resolution be adopted as read and numbered Resolution No. 1571. Moved by Councilman Strohmeier, seconded by ' Councilman Carr that the Street Superintendent be authorized and instructed to gravel and pave Crescent -Drive with the understanding that the expense entailed, which will be a saving of $$500, if done at this time, be charged against the M.V.A. Moved by Councilman Owens, seconded by Councilman Carr that the matter of painting the pump house and equipment, repairing the roof, erecting screens, etc., be referred to the Board of Public Works, with power to act. Moved by Councilman Dickerson, seconded by Councilman Carr that the matter of painting the Monument located at the intersection of ' Foothill Boulevard and Azusa Avenue be referred to the Board of Public works, with power to act.
