HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 95-C39RESOLUTION NO. 95-C39 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA IN SUPPORT OF THE CALIFORNIA POLICE CHIEFS ASSOCIATION POSITION PAPER CONCERNING THE NEED TO BETTER REGULATE FIREARMS WHEREAS, In our societal ferment of many and varied conflicting opinions, dogmatic beliefs and agendas, exists the fast evolving confrontation between those who strongly believe in a free and unrestricted interpretation of Amendment II to the U.S. Constitution, directing that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, and those who point out, at length, the need to regulate the distribution and possession of firearms, and WHEREAS, Into this hotbed of controversy, the California Police Chief Association has introduced a position paper concerning, not the prohibition as many are quick to believe, but the much needed regulation of firearms possession, and WHEREAS, In a well reasoned and professionally objective manner, the position paper addresses the rapidly escalating national tragedy of largely unregulated firearm violence, and provides for regulation through (1 )Registration, (2)Ownership and Possession, (3)Magazine Capacity, (4)Storage, (5)Safety Standards, (6)Concealed Weapons, (7)Assault Weapons, (8)Unlawful Possession and (9)Mandatory destruction of unlawful firearms; each point is discussed and presents a conclusion delineating the methods to be used for implementation. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, The City Council of the City of Azusa, recognizing the need to establish at least some coherent regulation of the explosion of carnage, suffering and paranoia surrounding the contemporary experience of firearms in our society, supports, in principle, the courageous statement by the California Association of Police Chiefs, in the February 2, 1995, adoption of its very much needed firearm control position paper.
