The City Council of the City of Azusa met in Special Session at the above time and place. Present at roll call: Councilmen: Jumper, Roll call. Malone, Owens, Strohmeier, Arnold, City Attorney and City Clerk. The Notice of Special Meeting and Officer's Notice read. Report were read as follows: TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: PLEASE TARE NOTICE that a special meeting of the City Council of the City of Azusa, State of California, IS HERESY CALLED to be held in the Council Chambers of said City at the hour of 7:30 P. M. on the 22nd day of March, 1939 for the purpose of considering and acting upon matters of protection for motorists and pedestrians where the streets of Azusa cross the Pacific Electric Railway Company and Santa Fe Railway Company tracks. Dated: March 22, 1939. ROY C. ARNOLD Mayor of the City of Azusa I hereby certify that I received the attached "NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY CO'CNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA" at 4:00 P. M. on the 22nd day of March, 1939, and that I served the same on the hereinafter named persons, who are members of the City Council of the said City of Azusa, at the time set after their respective names, by personally delivering to and leaving with said persons a true copy of the attached "NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AZUSA". MEYER Assistant Wiler Wileor Police Mayor Arnold asked if any one present cared to be heard in the matter of protection of life and property where streets cross the Pacific Electric and Santa Fe tracks in Azusa. Mrs. Kort Meier, President of the P.T.A., addressed the Council requesting that immediate steps be taken to eliminate the hazardous condition now existing at the crossings. Cornelius Smith, Secretary of the Azusa Plan- ning Commission offered the following recommendation: At a called meeting of the Azusa City Planning Commission held in Mayor Arnold's office at 7 P. M. on the above date, the matter of proper warning signals to the traveling public, at the principal street and rail road crossings was discussed, to better safeguard the vehicle driving public and prevent accidents, if possible at said crossings. A motion was made by J. 0. Durrell, seconded by Victor Owens and carried "The Planning Commission recommend and request the City Council to place the latest designed stop signals on all principal streets where signal warnings do not now exist Mrs. Meier addressed Council. M. to warn the traveling public to stop before crossing the Santa Fe or Pacific Electric rail road tracks at crossings in the City of Azusa. Those present were Chairman F. S. Bowen, Assistant to the President Air. Bowen addressed and Mr. C. A. Shook, Safety Supervisor of the the Council. Pacific Electric Railway Company were present. Mr. Bowen addressed the Council stating that he did not know how the Railway Company could stand the expense of safety.devices at the crossings, that it was the City's responsibility to pro- tect its citizens. Mr. Van Sooy, Editor of the Azusa Herald, Neal Van Sooy addressed the Council stating that in his addressed Council. opinion the Boulevard Stop Sign was more effective than the wig -wag for in 1937 seven people were killed in or near Azusa, three where the wig -wags were in operation. Moved by Councilman Strobmeier, seconded by Recommendation of Councilman Jumper that the recommendation of Planning Commissior the Planning Commission be accepted by the City held on table. Council and held on the table pending further action. Carried by the following vote of the Councili Ayes: Councilmen: Jumper, Malone, Owens, Strohmeier, Arnold. ' Noes: None. Absent: None.
