C97 - C34 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY AZUSA AUTHORIZING CO -AUTHORSHIP OF SENATE BILL NO. 1310 REDUCING THE STATE SALES TAX BY 1% AND SUBSTITUTING A CITY SALES TAX OF 1% WHEREAS, the Sales and Use Tax Law imposes a tax at specified rates on gross receipts from the sale of tangible personal property, and WHEREAS, the Bradley -Bums Uniform Local Sales and Use Tax Law authorizes local governments, such as cities, to adopt a specified Sales and Use Tax Ordinance at a rate of 1%, and WHEREAS, recent tax limitation measures have inadvertently eroded long-established sources of income to cities for the preservation and maintenance of public safety, public infrastructure, libraries and park facilities, and WHEREAS, Senator Johnson of Irvine has introduced in the California Legislature an amendment to the Bradley -Burns law that would authorize cities to reduce the State Sales Tax by 1% and substitute a City Sales Tax of 1%, and WHEREAS, the City of Azusa has in fact experienced serious reductions in its traditional revenue sources such as property taxes and sales tax, and WHEREAS, without these sources it is difficult for the City to maintain needed public services, and WHEREAS, concerned cities across the State of California have been invited to join with Senator Johnson in authoring the bill, and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Azusa does hereby lend its support and approval to Senate Bill No. 1310 and does hereby add its name as co- author of said proposed legislation. ADOPTED AND APPROVED this 7th day of April, 1997.
