The City Council of the City of Azusa met in regular session at the above time and place. Present at roll call: Councilmen: Nasser, Jumper, Memmesheimer, Malone, Lawn, City Attorney Miller and City Clerk. Absent: None The minutes of the last regular meeting of March 17 and the adjourned meeting of March 24, 1947 were approved as written. ' A letter protesting the installation of a nine foot gas vent and gas meters in the parkway in front of her property facing on West Eleventh Street, was offered by Mrs. Mabel Richards. Moved by Councilman Jumper, seconded by Council- man Nasser this matter be referred to the City Engineer and the City Clerk. Carried by the following vote of the Council: Ayes: Councilmen: Nasser, Jumper, Memmesheimer, Malone, Lamm. Noes: None. Absent: None. Howard Cory, representing the California Pro- hibitionist Group, addressed Council relative to the State law governing cocktail bars and taverns requiring them to use bright lights and remove obstructions from windows to provide unlimited view of the interior, from the street. Council assured Mr. Cory of the City's cooperation in this matter. A communication from the Planning Commission ' recommending that Council grant a zone variance to Mr. John V. Fry to establish a Food Market on the northwest corner of Azusa Avenue and First Street, was read. It was resolved by Councilman Jumper, seconded by Councilman Malone that the recommendation of the Planning Commission be approved and variance granted as to property described as Lot No. 19 in Block 76, City of Azusa, so as to permit uses prescribed for a C-2 Zone upon condition that a ten foot set -back be maintained on Azusa Avenue frontage; that the outside walls of the building of one hour fire resistant material; that ample space be provided for off-street parking. The loading and unloading of merchandise to be provided for in the rear of the property. Carried by the following vote of the Council: Ayes: Councilmen: Nasser, Jumper, Memmesheimer, Malone, Lamm. Noes: None. Absent: None. Councilman Memmesheimer offered an,Ordinance entitled: AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ' AZUSA, LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, PROHIBITING THE BURNING OR ACCUMULATION OF COMBUSTIBLES.OUTSIDE OF ANY BUILDING IN FIRE ZONE NUMBER ONE AND FIRE ZONE NUMBER TWO IN SAID CITY AND PRESCRIBING PENALTIES FOR VIOLATION THEREOF. to be placed upon its second reading. Moved by Councilman Malone, seconded by Council- man Nasser Council waive the further reading of this ordinance. City Attorney Miller tendered his resignation as CITY ATTORNEY City Attorney of the City of Azusa, effective at once. MILLER'S RESIGNATION Moved by Councilman Malone, seconded by Councilman ' Jumper Council accept this resignation and the City Clerk be instructed to write Mr. Miller expressing Councilts regret and appreciation for services rendered. Letters from the General Petroleum Company, Texas Company, Union Oil Company and the Stumpf Electric Company requesting information relative to the operation and control of the City Sales Tax were offered. INQUIRIES ON CITY SALES TAX Moved by Councilman Malone, seconded by Council- REFERRED TO CITY man Memmesheimer that all questions relative to ATTORNEY the interpretation of the Sales Tax Ordinance be referred to the City Attorney and a copy of the opinions rendered be submitted to Council at the next regular meeting thereof.
