HomeMy WebLinkAboutE-5 Staff Report - West Wing Ceiling AbatementCONSENT ITEM E-5 TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL VIA: SERGIO GONZALEZ, CITY MANAGER FROM: DANIEL BOBADILLA, P.E., DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS/CITY ENGINEER DATE: APRIL 2, 2018 SUBJECT: AUTHORIZATION TO SOLICIT BIDS FOR THE WEST WING CEILING ABATEMENT PROJECT SUMMARY: An air quality test and material survey were conducted in the City Hall West Wing building. Test results recommend thorough cleaning above the drop ceilings and replacement of insulation and ceiling tiles throughout the entire West Wing. The proposed action will authorize Staff to solicit bids from qualified contractors to rehabilitate the ceiling at City Hall West Wing. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the City Council take the following actions: 1) Approve the project plans; and 2) Authorize Staff to solicit a Notice of Inviting Bids for the West Wing Ceiling Abatement Project DISCUSSION: On September 8, 2015, Aurora Industry Hygiene, Inc. performed an air quality test and visual inspection of the spaces above the drop ceiling system in the West Wing of City Hall. The test results recommended removal and replacement of the drop ceiling system and insulation. Prior to proceeding with these improvements, Staff obtained the services of Owen Group and Ninyo & Moore to conduct a thorough analysis of all the materials in the ceiling system. The material survey, conducted on August 24, 2017, affirms the removal and replacement of the existing drop ceiling system and fiberglass insulation and also recommends the abatement of various materials within the ceiling system. If approved by the City Council, Staff will solicit bids from qualified contractors. Staff will review submitted bids and request approval from the City Council to award a contract at a future meeting.
