The City Council of the City of Azusa met
in regular session at the'above time and
place.
Present at roll cal 1: Councilmen: Jackson,
Seltzer, Memmesheimer, Jones, City Attorney
and City Clerk. Absent: Councilman Ortuno.
Each member present acknowledged receipt
of a written copy of the minutes of the
regular meeting of December 17th, adjourned
meeting of December 18th and special meeting
' of December -28, 1952. The Mayor asked if there
were any objections or corrections to said
minutes. There being none, the Minutes of
December 17th, December 18th and December
28th were approved as written.
A communication from Dockweiler & Dookweiler
relative to the removal of a transformer bank,
owned by the City and located at 1000 West
Foothill Blvd., was read.
Moved by Councilman Jackson, seconded by
Councilman Memmesheimer this matter be referred
to the City Attorney to report back.
Carried by the following vote of the Council:
Ayes: Councilmen: Jackson, Seltzer,
Memmesheimer, Jones.
Noes: None Absent: Councilman Ortuno.
Fire Chief Madison requested permission to
appoint John Littlefield as Full Time Fireman
on the Azusa Fire Department subject to six
month probationary period.
' Moved by Councilman Seltzer, seconded by
Councilmen Memmesheimer the City Attorney be
instructed to draw a resolution employing
John Littlefield as a probationary employee
in the capacity of a full ,time fireman, his
salary to be set at $244.00 per month, effective
February 1, 1952.
Carried by the following vote of the Council:
Ayes: Councilmen: Jackson, -Seltzer,
Memmesheimer, Jones.
Noes: None Absent: Councilman Ortuno.
A letter signed by A. L. Hutchinson, Asst.
District Engineer, Division of Highways, -
written in answer to Resolution No. 2576
requesting the State to reconsider the installation
of signals on Foothill Blvd. was read and ordered
placed on file.
A request for the use of the Azusa Memorial Park
baseball diamond offered by the San Francisco
Seals Baseball Club, Inc., was read.
Moved by Councilman Memmesheimer, seconded by
' Councilman Seltzer this request be referred
to the Park and Recreation Commission, with
power to act.
Carried by the following vote of the Council:
Ayes: Councilmen: Jackson, Seltzer,
Memmesheimer, Jones.
Noes: None Absent: Councilman Ortuno.

erection and maintenance of a District Hospital
in this area.
Moved by Councilman Memmesheimer, seconded
by Councilman Seltzer the Mayor be authorized
to re -activate the former committee appointed
for the investigation of the project, or to C0MITTEE TO
appoint a new committee with instructions that INVESTIGATE ERECTION OF
this committee contact local interested groups A DISTRICT HOSPITAL
to secure additional information and report
back to Council. '

Mr. Hickey addressed Council relative to the
zone variance regulating the set -back on Lots
43-44-45-46-47 in Tract No. 16374. 24, SET BACK FOR CERTAIN
The Planning Commission recommended that lots LOTS IN TRACT No. 16374
43-44-45-46-47 have a set -back -(front yard) of
24 feet.

Council was advised that it would be
necessary to advertise for bids on the
City's annual supply of gasoline.
Moved by Councilman Memmesheimer, seconded
by Councilman Jackson the City Clerk be in-
structed to advertise for bids on gasoline BIDS ON GASOLINE
to be opened January 21, 1952.

The City Clerk reported that the records do
not reveal a written authorization to use the
10 acre parcel of land owned by the City DISCUSSION ON USE OF
located north of Eleventh Street and West of CITY-OWTMD PROPERTY
Orange Avenue.
Councilman Memmesheimer recommended that those
who wish to stable horses on this land be re-
quired to sign a lease with certain restrictions
as to the condition of the premises, also to

by Councilman Jackson this matter be re-
ferred to the Park and Recreation Commission
to work out a plan for use of this land by
individuals.

Noes: Councilman Seltzer. Absent: Council-
man Ortuno.
The matter of increase in domestic gas rates
was discussed.
Moved and carried this matter be referred
to the City Attorney to report back.
A letter signed by H. H. J,aqueth, Chief Local
Allocation Division of the State Department
of Finance relative to the balance still out-
standing of $5,313.32 which is available as the
State's share of expenditures made by the
Water -Department under Application No. 20.828
(Project 2), was presented.
Moved and carried this matter be referred to
City Engineer Brooks and Superintendent Smith
to report back.
Moved by Councilman Memmesheimer, seconded by
Councilman Seltzer the City Clerk be instructed
to advertise for bids for sufficient pipe to
complete Project 2, bids to be opened on January
21, 1952 at 7:30 P.M.

The Park and Recreation Commission recommended
that the request for the removal of pepper
trees on Crescent Drive be denied.

ing of oak trees in this area.
The Park and Recreation Commission brought
to the attention of Council what they considered

Mayor Jones requested Superintendent Smith to
submit the figure in error, charged against the
park water meter, so that this amount may be

applied in correcting the Park and Rec-
reation budget.
The minutes of the Personnel Board were
read and ordered placed on file. PERSONNEL BOARD
Mayor Jones reported on various matters of
interest to Council.

Mayor Jones read a letter from Fred G. Becker,
Civil Defense Director, submitting a list
of equipment to be used in training Civil

Defense Personnel.
Moved by Councilman Memmesheimer, seconded
by Councilman Seltzer Council budget $3500.00
with the understanding the Federal Government
will supply an equal amounttopurchase
training equipment, provided the articles
purchased will be of some value to the City
after the emergency no longer exists.

Memmesheimer, Jones.
Noes: None Absent: Councilman Ortuno.
Mayor Jones reported the Regional Coordinator
requested space be provided, if possible,
for the storage of medical equipment, owned
by the Civilian Defense Program.
Superintendent V. D. Smith reported on a pro-
posed well site at -the corner of First Street
and Virginia Avenue. _
Moved by Councilman Jackson, seconded by
Councilman Memmesheimer the City Attorney

property and secure a written offer, to be
presented to Council at the next regular
meeting.

Fire Chief Madison requested the office space
now occupied by the City Engineer for use of
the Fire Department.
Moved and carried this request be referred
to the City Engineer for investigation and
report.
City Engineer Brooks reported on the progress
made in the matter of preparation of the pro-
ceedings for the 1911 Street Improvement Act.
Councilman Memmesheimer offered an Ordinance
