SUBJECT: APPROVE USE OF CITY HALL FRONT LAWN FOR AZUSA ROTARY WEEK
LONG VETERAN’S DAY CELEBRATION FLAG DISPLAY
SUMMARY:
The Azusa Rotary is requesting the use of the front lawn at City Hall from November 4 13, 2016 to host
its signature annual fundraising project to honor soldiers, veterans and citizens. The Rotary’s facility use
application was tentatively approved at the August 18, 2016 meeting of the Parks and Recreation
Commission. The week long Veteran’s Day Celebration Flag Display, dubbed “The Field of Glory,”
will complement the City’s traditional Veteran’s Day program and will benefit soldiers and veterans’
relief and Rotary’s youth activities including assistance in the City of Azusa School Year Enrichment
Field Trip Program. All costs and insurance indemnification will be borne by the Azusa Rotary Club.
The City will not be responsible for any costs affiliated with this program. This action approves the use
of the front law at City Hall for the Azusa Rotary’s sponsored week long Veteran’s Day Celebration
Flag Display, “The Field of Glory.”
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council take the following action:

Azusa Rotary will solicit sponsorships and donations through partners and Rotary members from area
businesses and organizations and individuals. They will start publicity soon in local media to begin
growing interest and awareness in the community. The Rotary will charge $35 per flag displayed on the
Field of Glory for a week, tag flags with honoree’s name and relevant information, and offer an index so
that visitors can find individuals flags.
They will offer flags and tags to their sponsors for pickup after the event, but will reuse the flags not
claimed by their sponsors for future Field of Glory displays. They will use the Azusa Rotary 501 c3 to
bank all funds, and divide profits between Rotary’s Youth Services and Soldier/Veterans’ Relief.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact associated with the recommended action.
