CITY HALL AZUSA, CALIFORNIA MONDAY AUGUST 1, 1953 f:30 PM
The City Council of the City of Azusa met in regular
session at the above time and place.
Present at Roll call: Councilkmen: Jackson, Hernandez,
Seltzer, Memmesheimer, Jones
City Attorney, City Engineer and
City Clerk.
' Each member present acknowledged receipt of a written
copy of the minutes of the regular meeting of July 20,
1953, The Mayor asked if there were any objections or
corrections to the minutes. Councilman Jackson
wished correction made regarding the motion made by
Councilman Memmesheimer, seconded by Councilman
Seltzer that men who have resigned from the
Police Department be notified they may report
to the Acting Chief and, subject to his re-
commendation, be reinstated or names placed
on eligible list. Councilman Jackson said Correction of
that he had originally seconded this motion minutes of
and had not withdrawn his second. July 20,1953
Moved by Councilman Jackson, seconded by
Councilman Memmesheimer records be corrected
to read as follows:
"Moved by Councilm4n Memmesheimer, seconded
by Councilman Jackson, that men who have re-
signed from the Police Department be notified
they may report to the Acting Police Chief
and on condition of acceptability to department
head and subject to his recommendation to City
' Council, they may be reinstated or names placed
on eligible list."
Councilman Hernandez disqualified himself from
voting.

Mayor Jones then announced the minutes of July
20th, 1953 stand as corrected.
Mayor Jones then read request of Ben A. Johnson

Mayor Jones read a communication from Civil Defense
Director requesting Azusa to join with -other -cities
in the Area and sharing the cost of a full time
coordinator.
Moved by Councilman Seltzer, seconded by Councilman
Memmesheimer and carried by unanimous vote, City
Attorney be instructed to inform writer that,
Council indicated their willingness to enter into City agrees

Motion carried by unanimous vote of Council.
Mayor Jones read letter signed by Clifton Wynn,
President of Chamber of Commerce recommending
the request of Mr. Huffstutter, Recreation Dir-
ector, to have a series of band -concerts in the
park bandshell beginning Friday, August 14th, 1953.
Concerts to be free to the public, the cost to be
charged to Music and Promotional Fund.
Moved by Councilman Memmesheimer,.seconded by

refer request to Park and Recreation Commission,
Attorney Snidow reported the proposed site for an
airport,presently considered,is not available
according to word received from Commander Black
of the United States Engineers office.

Hernandez, City Attorney draw resolution setting the
tax rate for the fiscal year 1953-1954 at $1.69 to
be prorated as follows: General Fund $1.00; Library
Fund, 18¢; Park and Recreation Fund, 30¢; Bond Re-
demption -3¢; Retirement Fund, 18¢; this -amount to
include the average 10% salary increases allowed
throughout the year.
Councilman Jackson moved to amend the motion in-
creasing the library rate to 20¢0 seconded by Coun-
cilman Memmesheimer.
Amendment motion failed by following vote:

Petition submitted signed by owners of land laying west
of and contiguous to the City of Azusa opposing proposal
for the annexation by the City of -Azusa of any of such
land.

City Council hes no„present plans for annexation of
territory as described and that if Council were to
consider proposition it would only be on a mutual
basis with land owners.
