HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - March 19, 1998 - PRC MINUTES OF THE AZUSA PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION - MARCH 19, 1998 The meeting was called to order at 5:10 p.m.in the Memorial Park lounge meeting CALL TO ORDER room by President Pro-Tem Harry Hoke. David Santellan led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. RESENT: Harry Hoke, Mary Sandlin, David Santellan, John Sanchez, Joe Torres, Condie Lopez, Donna McCormick, and Chairperson Carolyn Crawford, Senior Services Manager. OTHERS: Joe Hsu, Director of Light and Water Department; Pete MacKay, Transportation Manager;Randy Noreiga,Recreation Superintendent; JoAnn Coppola,Head Start Coordinator;Rich Rivera,Parks Supervisor. Minutes of March 5, 1998 were approved in motion by Joe Torres, seconded by MARCH MINUTES David Santellan. APPROVED Joe Hsu offered a very informative presentation on the Deregulation of Electricity DEREGULATION OF and the effect on Azusa residents. Basically,the Azusa Light and Water Department ELECTRICITY is taking a conservative stand and expects their prices to remain status quo until the year 2002 after which we should see a drop in fees to the Azusa consumers. The following items were unanimously approved with standard conditions in motion by Harry Hoke, seconded by David Santellan. Request by Angie Vasquez to use Zacatecas Park for a birthday party on April 18 A. VASQUEZ TO USE from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Anticipated attendance is 30 persons. Wish to use a ZACATECAS PARK FOR on bounce (liability insurance information in process). BIRTHDAY PARTY Request by Lenore Gonzales, Memorial Park staff for use of the gym, tables, chairs, L. GONZALES TO USE PA system, and helium tank for a class recital for community classes on March 27, GYM FOR RECITAL 1998. Anticipated attendance is between 100-200 persons. Request by Spanish Trails Girl Scouts Council to use Pioneer Park, northeast section GIRL SCOUTS TO USE group area, on April 19, 1998 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. for Father/Daughter Picnic for PIONEER PARK approximately 125 persons. Request by Joe Jacobs for Community Services youth basketball to hold tryouts in J. JACOBS TO USE GYM the gymnasium on July 8, 1998 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. There will be approximately FOR YOUTH BASKETBALL 100-150 persons. TRYOUTS Request from Juan and Eva Uribe to use the day camp room for a birthday party, URIBE TO USE DAY March 22, from 12:00-3:00 p.m. CAMP ROOM Request by Anthony Granados to reserve the gazebo on May 16, 1998 between A. GRANADOS TO USE 2:00 and 5:30 p.m. for a wedding with approximately 100 guests was discussed at GAZEBO FOR WEDDING some length with regard to a fee, security, how to ensure the reservation, etc. Motion by Harry Hoke, seconded by Joe Torres to unanimously approve with the following conditions: staff will post a sign similar to the one at Pioneer Park laining how to reserve the area. Another sign will indicate the specific approved reservation. Copies of the reservation will be forwarded to the Parks crew and Police personnel. There will be no Recreation staff or City equipment (such as tables and chairs) utilized for this reservation. MINUTES OF THE AZUSA PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION - MARCH 19, 1998 PAGE TWO The approval of the gazebo sparked discussion of reserving or renting park areas DISCUSSION OF and the pros and cons of doing so. Harry requested rental recommendations from RESERVING OR s+^iff regarding all areas that the Commission currently approves. A review of the RENTING PARK AREAS of neighboring communities was suggested. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS The Chamber's request for use of 28 booths for their March 25th Business Expo was CHAMBER TO USE previously approved. When approached this week by staff, "Oh yes,we also need BOOTHS FOR BUSINESS 30 tables, 120 chairs, three EZ-up canopies, and the stage." Randy will coordinate EXPO. ALSO ADDED this request, but Commissioners expressed concern regarding overtime to take TABLES, CHAIRS, EZ-UPS everything down at 7:00 p.m. and requested that a letter be directed to the AND STAGE TO REQUEST Chamber Director and Board of Directors expressing our concern over their lack of planning and the extra expense to the City. Centennial planning: Randy reported that there are several subcommittees CENTENNIAL PLANNING operating. They are looking for 100% community participation, limited "City" participation. ($4,200 from Joe Hsu's publicity account, $5,000 from Miller, and $2,500 from APU). It is anticipated that large corporate support will be required to coordinate the proposed activities. As needed,some things will be dropped from the plan to coordinate with the financial support acquired. Budget submissions are due to the Finance Department by March 30th. Community BUDGET Services divisions will report to the Commission on April 2"d regarding their budget r' -iuests. Youth in Government activities were held with approximately sixty high school YOUTH IN government class students interacting with varied City division staff. The day closed GOVERNMENT with a pizza party following a mock City Council meeting. Carolyn Crawford and Joe Jacobs both served as mentors to assigned students. Rich Rivera gave the following report: New water lines at Northside Park were RICH RIVERA'S wreaking havoc with the ball field lighting system; Weed abatement is being DIVISION REPORT looked into per Condie's request; Court referrals are no longer being accepted due to a recent problem;The Parks Division participated in Gladstone High School's Career Day by providing a bucket tuck and staff, they will also attend Azusa High School's Career Day. The meeting was adjourned at 6:30 p.m. ADJOURN The next meeting of the Azusa Parks and Recreation Commission will be held April NEXT MEETING 4/2/98 2, 1998 at 5:00 p.m. at the Memorial Park Recreation Center.
