The meeting was called to order at 5:05 p.m. by Chairman, Mary Sandlin. Donna McCormick led CALL TO ORDER
the group in the Pledge of Allegiance
PRESENT: Marvin Sandlin, David Santellan, Donna McCormick, Joe Torres, Condie Lopez. ROLL CALL
EXCUSED: Jack Bean
ABSENT: Harry Hoke
OTHERS: Joseph Guarrera, Director Community Services
Ross Montes, Senior Tree Trimmer
Minutes were approved as corrected. MINUTES APPROVED
Ross Montes, Senior Tree Trimmer and member of the Tree Committee gave a report on their TREE COMMITTEE
recent meeting to discuss possible replacement trees for Foothill and Aosta. A suggested
replacement is the "Bottle Tree"three addresses were given where specimens of various ages could
be seen:
I. 360 N. Cerritos - approx. 5 to 7 years
2. 251 N. Cerritos - approx. 15 to 20 years
3. 18141 S. Rockvale at Gladstone
`,iembers were asked to visit these locations before the next meeting(February 20th)for further
discussion.
The Tree Committee also is recommending that the tree crew be given the authority to remove TREE CREW GIVEN
dead,dying, diseased or hazardous trees without having to get prior approval from the Commission. AUTHORITY TO
It was moved by Condie Lopez, seconded by David Santellan and unanimously approved with the REMOVE DEAD,
understanding that a report of such removed trees be given to the Commission at future meetings. DYING OF DISEASED

While Ross was still in attendance, the Park Division new uniform was displayed for the members
to see. NEW PARK UNIFORM
Items I thru 5 were approved on a single motion by Donna McCormick, seconded by Condie 1-5 APPROVED
Lopez.
1. Request from American Little League to use a meeting room at the Recreation Center on AMERICAN LITTLE
Wednesday Feb. 12th and every 2nd Wednesday of the month through July 1997. 7:30 to LEAGUE
8:30 p.m.
Recommendation: Approve depending upon availability.
2. Request from National Little League to use a meeting room at the Recreation Center on NATIONAL LITTLE
Wednesday, February 26, 7:00 to 9:00 for parents meeting. LEAGUE
Recommendation: Approve.
`,. Request from Edie Acosta to use Day Camp Room on Sunday, February 9, 1997, 10:00 a.m. EDIE ACOSTA/DAY
to 4:00 p.m. for Birthday Party. CAMP ROOM
Recommendation: Approve with appropriate fees.

4. Request from Christine Robles to use Northside Park with moon bounce on Saturday, MOON BOUNCE NS
February 9, 1997, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. PARK
Recommendation: Approve with usual conditions.
5. Request from Monrovia Nursery to have Commission meet at their facility for the March 6, MONROVIA
1997 meeting. NURSERY
Recommendation: Approve so that proper notification can be made.
Item 6- Request from Circuit City Employees to use the gym on Sunday, February 9, 1997, 8:00 CIRCUIT CITY
to 10:00 p.m.was presented. It was moved by Donna McCormick, seconded by David Santellan EMPLOYEES
and unanimously approved with appropriate fees.
Staff gave a brief update on various departmental activities and programs. PROGRAM REPORT
Concerning Jack Bean's absences,the Director had a telephone call from Jack, and he explained that JACK BEAN
his job sometimes makes it difficult to attend meetings. He said he would tender his resignation if
that's what the group wants. The Director explained that if he could attend the remaining meetings
as his term is up June 1997. Jack explained that he really couldn't commit to that as he never knows
where his work will take him.
Mary Sandlin suggested that we try to have at least one "good" concert this summer, rather than a SUMMER CONCERT
series.
loe Torres inquired into the status of Monrovia Nursery project. MONROVIA

There being no further business,the meeting was adjourned at 6:33 p.m. ADJOURN
The next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission will be Thursday, February 20, 1997. NEXT MTG.
