September 3, 1997 Dear Recreation Staff, I have been asked to address you during this staff orientation with a specific reason in mind. My four sons have all been "Park Kids". So as a parent, I have seen many aspects of the affect people in your position have on kids. In the past nine years we have seen many staff members come and go. We have also seen many, many that have come and stayed. Most of those that have stayed, have done so because they truly love what they do. Working with kids is a natural thing for them. This has been such a blessing and a true benefit to the youth of Azusa. The Rec staff plays such a vital role in the lives of these young people. They possess the power to "make or break" a child's self esteem. Park kids look to this staff for guidance, they form a respect for you and you become a role model to be looked up to. Keeping this in mind, please be the kind of"coach"that aids in the making of these kids into responsible well rounded young people. Many of these kids have caring parents available to them. On the other hand, many do not and they look to their coaches even more for positive guidance. The job that you have accepted comes with a lot of responsibility that should be taken very seriously. When a parent puts this child into your care, they must be comfortable in knowing that you will be dependable, responsible and caring when dealing with all of these children. They all have so much to give in so many ways. So much can be gained from having good, positive experiences. That is what the Park and Recreation staff has been counted on for in the past and should be able to be counted on in the future. When dealing with these children, PLEASE try to be the kind of person, that you yourself would want your own children coached by. Try to be the kind of person that you would have liked to be coached by as a child. My own sons have great memories of participating in the many different programs offered by the park. We feel lucky to have such a wonderful staff available to our children. You are very important to all of the "Park Families" in Azusa. Thanks for all that you do!
