HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - August 7, 1997 - PRC MINUTES OF AZUSA PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING -- AUGUST 7, 1997 The meeting was called to order at 5:10 p.m. by Joe Torres. Mayor Cristina Madrid led the group in the CALL TO ORDER dge of allegiance. PRESENT: Harry Hoke, David Santellan, Joe Torres, Condie Lopez, Mayor Cristina Madrid,Joe Jacobs ROLL CALL EXCUSED: Mary Sandlin,Joe Guarrera Minutes were approved as mailed. MINUTES APPROVED Items 1-4 on the consent calendar were approved as recommended. 1. Request from Lee School to use Slauson Pool on Friday, September 12, 1997 from 12 noon to LEE SCHOOL TO USE 2:00 p.m.for homework incentive. POOL 9/12/97 Recommendation: Approve with appropriate fees. 2. Request from San Gabriel Valley Irish Baseball to use 15 tables and 100 chairs on Thursday, SGV IRISH BASEBALL August 7, 1997 from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m.for world series open lunch. REQUIRED DENIED Recommendation: Deny, private group not City sponsored. 3. Request from Glendora Alliance Church to use BBQs on Saturday,August 9, 1997 at Slauson GLENDORA ALLIANCE Pool. CHURCH TO USE BBQs Recommendation: Approve as pool had already been rented by group. 4. Request from Rob Velasco to use Day Camp room on Saturday,August 23, 1997 from 12:00 ROB VELASCO TO USE noon to 4:00 p.m.for baby shower. DAY CAMP ROOM Recommendation: Approve with appropriate fees. 8/23/97 Prior to staff overview of departmental program and activities, Mayor Madrid addressed the issue of the MAYOR MADRID '- 'dget and the inaccuracies of the recent coverage of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. ADDRESSED BUDGET ISSUES Mayor Madrid asked "How we can work together?" to restore cut recreation programs and asked for the Commission to play an active role in the search for a solution to the shortfall. Madrid also addressed "revolving account" issue as a vehicle to identify those programs that generate revenue to gain an accurate depiction of each program. She also stated that in the event the 1.2 million dollar deficit is not recouped in the November 4, 1997 election, layoffs and or/salary fall backs are to be expected. Suggested revenue generating activities: 5K/I OK Run, Bike Races. Harry Hoke shared a concern regarding Jr.All American Football program and City subsidized costs. He HARRY HOKE CONCERN inquired as to cost of lights,field prep, utilities, etc. Staff to research and provide information at an upcoming RE:JAAF COSTS meeting. There being no further business,the meeting was adjourned at 6:45 p.m. MEETING ADJOURNED The next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission will be Thursday,August 2 I, 1997 at 5:00 p.m. NEXT MEETING 8/21/97 at the Memorial Park Recreation Center.
