The meeting was called to order at 5:I I p.m. by Vice President, Harry Hoke who led the group CALL TO ORDER
Lin the Pledge of Allegiance in room 5 of the Recreation Center.
PRESENT: David Santellan, Harry Hoke, Donna McCormick, Marvin Sandlin, Joe Torres, ROLL CALL
Condie Lopez.
ABSENT: Jack Bean
OTHERS: Randy Noriega, Recreation Superintendent,Joseph Guarrera, Director, Bob Dunn
& Pam Mercado-AYP Representatives.
Minutes were approved as submitted. MINUTES APPROVED
Randy Noriega introduced the coaches of the Boy's 'C' Division Flag Football team from Memorial FLAG FOOTBALL ANC
Park who won the San Gabriel Valley Tournament and placed 3rd in the SCMAF finals. Coaches VOLLEYBALL AWARDS
Artie Arias and Rich Espinosa presented each of the boys with a nice trophy. The 'B' Division
(Memorial Park)and 'A' Division(Foothill School)girls volleyball teams were Azusa's representatives
in the San Gabriel Valley Tournament. Coaches, Lori Madden, Marissa Herrera, Kristine Drouillard
and Shell Jackson introduced their players and presented them with appreciation trophies. Parents
and friends were on hand to congratulate the players.
The Commission members relocated to the lounge for the remainder of the meeting.
Items l& 2 on the agenda were approved on a single motion by David Santellan, seconded by 1-2 APPROVED
Donna McCormick.
1 . Request from Joe Peake, Lee School, to use Slauson Pool on Tuesday,June 17, 1997 from LEE SCH/SLAUSON
11 :00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for Personal Development Incentive. POOL
Recommendation: Approve with appropriate fees.
2. Request from Bishop Amat High School to use Slauson Pool February 17 to May 8, 1997 from BISHOP
3:00 to 5:15 p.m. for swim team practices and meets. AMAT/SLAUSON
Recommendation: Approve with appropriate fees. POOL
Request from Lydia Duarte to use Day Camp room, Saturday, February I , 1997, 12:00 to 4:00 LYDIA DUARTE/DAY
p.m.was considered. It was moved by Harry Hoke, seconded by Condie Lopez and unanimously CAMP ROOM
approved with appropriate fees.
Request from Jackie Hemandez to use Day Camp room, Sunday, February 2, 1997, 12:00 to 3:00 JACKIE
p.m.was considered. It was moved by Joe Torres, seconded by David Santellan and unanimously HERNANDEZ/DAY

L'Request from Chamber to use Senior Center for Miss Azusa reception Saturday, February 15, 1997, CHAMBER/SEN I O R
10:00 p.m. to midnight was discussed. It was moved by Donna McCormick, seconded by David CENTER/MISS AZUSA
Santellan and carried with Harry Hoke abstaining.
Staff gave a brief report of Department Programs and projects. DEPT. REPORT
Concerning the recent wind storm, we lost a total of 213 trees;the greatest loss was along Foothill WIND STORM
&Alosta where we lost 124 trees. On old Foothill 24; in the median 28; and residential areas 37. REPORT
We have 10 trees in need of cosmetic pruning.
As of January 16, 1997 some, 10 days after the horrendous winds, the City-crews had all streets
deared and passible and are 95%caught up with the dean-up effort. Next week they start on the
parks.
Invitation from Rosedale-Monrovia Nursery to attend a meeting at the Nursery to review and ROSEDALE/
discuss their proposed development. They are suggesting we adjourn a Commission meeting to MONROVIA
their location since they have a large 3D topo of the project there and we could better understand NURSERY
their proposal.
Replacement trees were discussed for Foothill/Alosta. It was agreed that the tree subcommittee FOOTHILL/ALOSTA
should be convened to study and develop a recommendation to be presented to City Council. TREES
Concern was expressed over Jack Bean's poor attendance at Commission meetings. Discussion JACK BEAN
followed and staff was directed to contact Mr. Bean to determine his intentions.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:43 p.m. ADJOURN
The next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission will be Thursday, February 6, 1997. NEXT MTG. 2/6/97
