HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - September 5, 1996 - PRC MINUTES OF AZUSA PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING -- SEPTEMBER 5, 1996 The meeting was called to order at 5:03 by Mary Sandlin. Condie Lopez led the group in the Pledge of CALL TO ORDER *'Allegiance. PRESENT: Mary Sandlin,Joe Torres, David Santellan, Condie Lopez,Jack Bean&Donna McCormick. ROLL CALL OTHERS: Joe Guarrera, Director Community Services ABSENT: Harry Hoke Minutes were approved as mailed. MINUTES APPROVED Items I-6 were approved on a single motion by Joe Torres,seconded by Condie Lopez. I. Request from Azusa High Girl's Volleyball team to use gym on August 28-30, 10:00 a.m.to 12 noon REQUEST FROM AHS for Volleyball practice. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Recommendation:Approve. 2. Request from Foothill Citrus Umpires to use Day Camp room Jan.7, 13, Feb. 3, March 10,24,April 7 REQUEST FROM and 21, 1997, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.for instruction of softball umpires. CITRUS UMPIRES TO Recommendation:Approve. USE ROOM 3. Request from Azusa Elks to use Pioneer Park on Sunday, Sept. 22, 1996, 9:00 a.m.to 6:00 p.m. for REQUEST FROM ELKS annual Picnic. TO USE PIONEER PK Recommendation:Approve with usual conditions. 4. Request from Powell PTA for use of 15 booths, Friday October 25, 1996, 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.for school POWELL PTA TO USE carnival 15 BOOTHS Recommendation: Approve. 5. Request from Chas Davies to have a Tulip tree planted in memory of Louise Davies, long time member REQUEST FROM LOUISE of the Library Commission. DAVIES-TULIP TREE Recommendation:Approve. 6. Request from Azusa Released Time Education to use Northside Park rec room on Tuesdays,August 20, REQUEST FROM AZUSA 1996 to May 1997 from I:30 to 2:30 p.m. RELEASED TIME Recommendation: Approve Request from Azusa High Football Boosters to use propane grills on Saturday, September 27, 1996,7:00 to AZUSA HIGH TO USE 11:C0 a.m.for a fundraiser was considered. It was moved by David Santellan,seconded by Donna McCormick PROPANE GRILLS to approve with usual conditions. 9/27/96 Staff gave a verbal update on various department programs and activities. DEPT. PROGRAMS Invitation to celebrate International Literacy month on Saturday, September 14, 1996, 10:00- I I:30 a.m.at INTERNATIONAL the Azusa Library was read. LITERACY MONTH Notice of California Association of Parks&Recreation Commissioners&Board Members workshop,Saturday, CAPRCBM WORKSHOP October 5, 1996, 8:30 to 4:00 p.m.was read. First draft of response EIR prepared in response to Rosedales specific plan was presented and distributed. ROSEDALE'S SPECS. An excerpt from Azusa Unified School District weekly update relative to Parks and Recreation opportunity was AZUSA UNIFIED WEEKLY UPDATE 9/5/96 MINUTES OF THE AZUSA PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION—8/15/96 PAGE TWO (Jquest from Natalie Saldana to use Pioneer Park on Saturday,August 24, 1996 from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. with a moon bounce was considered. ft was motioned by David Santellan, seconded by Condie Lopez to REQUEST FROM approve. NATALIE SALDANA Staff gave a brief update on various departmental programs and activities. PROGRAM UPDATE Copy of memo sent to Councilman Hardison by Chairman Sandlin was read relative to trees at Pioneer Park. TREES AT PIONEER Commission update to City Council will take place on Monday,August 19. UPDATE TO CC Director apologized for lateness of invitation to Canyon Park ground breaking ceremony which took place on Wednesday,August 14 at 9:00 a.m. APOLOGY FOR LATENESS OF INVITE Staff is proposing a statement relative to regulations for use of moon bounce and other attractions at City parks be outlined in the next issue of"Azusa at a Glance". Aso that signs be placed at Pioneer Park Northeast section MOON BOUNCE stating that area is available for rental and is the only park subject to reservation. Members agreed this should REGULATIONS TO BE be done. DEVELOPED Farmers Market was discussed. Two farmers had stated earlier this day that this is "their do or die day". it appears they are not getting sufficient support to justify their expenses. We have already lost several others. FARMERS MARKET WAS We have tried many different methods of advertising, adjusted the location, etc. However,the people just DISCUSSED aren't coming out to support the market. r-embers expressed concern and shared comments they have heard from citizens, ie"1 can buy it cheaper at �e grocery store","quality is not as good as in the stores". This is something we are going to have to address soon. There being no further business,the meeting was adjourned at 6:25 p.m. ADJOURN
