The meeting was informally called to order at 5:00 p.m. at Memorial Park for an Arbor Day- TREE PLANTING
City U.S.A. ceremony. The ceremony consisted of the planting of three trees in CEREMONY
memory of three deceased Mayors of the City of Azusa. Family and friends of Mayor
Decker, Mayor Cooney and Mayor Ortuno were represented at the ceremony. City Council
and staff present were: Henry Garcia, Bob Garcia, Cristina Madrid, Louie Pedroza, Randy
Noriega. The Tree City U.S.A. Committee was introduced: Mr. Tom Neff, Mr. Ross Montes
and Mr. Condie Lopez. The ceremony consisted of a short welcome and introductions by
Louie Pedroza and a ceremonial shoveling of soil into the tree well. The Commission
excused themselves from the completed ceremony and started its regular meeting.
The regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission was called to order at 5:35
p.m. by Chairman Joe Torres. Mary Sandlin led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. CALL TO ORDER
PRESENT: Joe Torres, David Santellan, Manv Sandlin, Condie Lopez, Harry Hoke,
Donna McCormick. ROLL CALL
OTHERS: Randy Noriega, Recreation Supervisor; Louie Pedroza, Superintendent of
Public Works; Tom Neff, Ross Montes, Tobias Delatorre
EXCUSED: Jack Bean
The minutes of April 4, 1996 were approved as mailed. MINUTES

Items number 1-8 were approved on a single motion by David Santellan, seconded by Mary
andlin.
1. Request from Carrie Heidenrich for the use of Memorial Park room 5 and the
kitchen for a family birthday party on May 4, 1996 from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. CARRIE USE ROOM
2. Request from Knights of Columbus of Azusa for the use of Pioneer Park on
August 11, 1996 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for a picnic. KNIGHTS TO USE
3. Request from Wynn Oil Company of Azusa for the use of Northside Park north PIONEER
ball field for a company softball game on May 11, 1996 from 8:00 a.m. to 12 WYNN TO USE NPK
noon. BALL FIELD
4. Request to have tree removed at 911 N. Soldano.
5. Request to have two trees removed at 227 S. Murray. TREE REMOVAL
6. Request to have tree removed at 724 E. Hollyvale.
7. Request to have tree removed at 246 S. Elliott.
8. Request to have tree removed at 227 S. Motor.
The Commission noted how helpful it was to have the advanced written report from Louie
Pedroza on the parkway tree request. REPORT ON TREE

9. Request from Slauson Middle school for 3 barrel type BBQ and all portable
bleachers on June 17, 1996 for graduation ceremony. Motion to approve by SLAUSON REQUEST

10. Request from Rob Velasco for 4 tables and 20 chairs for a family birthday on 4-
20-96. Motion to approve by Mary Sandlin, seconded by Condie Lopez, ROB V. REQUEST

Northside Park south field from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Motion to approve by BALL FIELD
Harry Hoke, seconded by David Santellan, approved.
14. Request from Magnolia School P.T.A. to use the fun jail on May 10, 1996 for a MAGNOLIA P.T.A.
fund raiser. After much discussion by Commission members and Louie Pedroza REQUEST TO USE
about the road safety and towing concerns the request was tabled. The FUN JAIL TABLED
Commission requested a written report from Mr. Louie Pedroza on the condition FOR REPORT ON
of the fun jail, who should transport the unit and what requirements are needed CONDITION OF JAIL
in the safe transport and use of the fun jail. Report is due back at 5-2-96
meeting.
Randy Noriega reported on activities within the Recreation, Head Start, Senior Programs and PROGRAM REPORT
Transportation Divisions.
Louie Pedroza reported on ongoing projects with the Parks Department.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:08 p.m. ADJOURN
