AGENDA ITEM
DATE: September 1, 1993
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
VIA: City Administrator, Henry Garcia
FROM: Joseph A. Guarrera, Director Community Services
SUBJECT: Pear Trees
BACKGROUND:
At the August 2, 1993 City Council meeting, Mr. Robert Law, 670 Edith Ann Dr.,
made a request that the "Pear" trees along Edith Ann be removed and replaced with
"Myrtle" trees." City Council directed the request to the Parks and Recreation
Commission for investigation and a recommendation.
FINDINGS:
A survey of the area revealed 27 Pyrus Kawakamii (Evergreen Pear) trees in front of
25 homes from 604 to 691 Edith Ann and 1307 to 1328 Craig Allen Dr. One tree at
1307 Craig Allen Dr. is dead and one tree at 655 Edith Ann appears to be diseased.
The only home without a tree is 670 Edith Ann. The Pyrus Kawakamii (Evergreen
Pear) trees were planted in 1970-71, they are well established and require little
maintenance. There would be a cost of $75.00 per tree to replant the Lagerstroemia
Indica (Crape Myrtle) trees to the property owner; some lots will require as many as
three trees.
The cost to the City for removal, and replanting would be very expensive. The
neighborhood would not have the benefit of shade or aesthetic appeal of the mature
trees they now have.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is the Parks and Recreation Commission's recommendation that the Pyrus
Kawakamii (Evergreen Pear) trees which currently exist not be removed or changed,
and that staff be directed to remove the dead tree at 1307 Craig Allen Dr. and to
examine the sickly tree at 655 Edith Ann Dr. to determine if it can be saved. If not,
have it removed also and both trees be replaced with the Pyrus Kawakamii (Evergreen
Pear) as the predominant tree of the neighborhood.9l%""
