The tree was introduced in Southern California for its color and ability to be shaped in many . forms and its popularity grew. Unfortunately the. long-term maintenance problems were not forseen and cities through- . out Southern ..California are...now..realizing the problem.. created in years past. Even to the point of removal. The Ficus will grow to. a height of 30 feet and can be pruned at any time of the year. "Unfortunately, -'Cuban Laurel:.Tbrips have_.become established' on_ Ficus in...California. a The.insect is difficult__ to control _ because it quickly curls the new leaves , stripping them and causing them to fall". .1 ' This insect- is costly -and hazzardous .in -its control methods. It cannot be sprayed. effectively and must be- applied to the soil and . taken_in by the root system. .:, The chemical. most commonly used is hazzardous to :humans and often:_times .the-'moist-residue . left is :picked-up . by.:foot :traffic . . Another and more important problem results in its rapid growth characteristics . The first situation encountered is the increase in trimming- .time to maintain the. apDearance most often desired, usually twice a year. You can use a figure of 11 - 2 manhours per tree (mature trees ) maintenance projections on trimming . Another situation resulting from this characteristic is its invasive root system. This problem alone draws most of the attention to .this tree. Concrete sidewalks , ' curbs and gutters are litterally lifted from their positions by the root. system of :the Titus. "The.increase.':cos:t. .are -obvious ;- removal of sidewalks , etc. and -re-forming and: pouring. :. trot to be forgotten .is the i interruption of . pedestrian traffic flow. As a result of the up-lifted sidewalks_.and..curbs we:leave' » us amideen.:fo:a_.labiity .problem stemming from a pedestrian tripping over this surface. The City of Glendora was contacted because their extensive use of Ficus in their downtown section. The above listed problems were - reiterated. They are no longer planting this species due to the problems listed and. will. maintain what: they`-have:-- Another problem -they encountered was the blockage of storefront .signs and windows due to their dense :'foliage for a period of 10-15 years. Now the . trees in this section of Glendora Ave. are. lifted. to allow visability under the trees.
