BOARD

SUBJECT: FOAM RECYCLING PROGRAM UPDATE
At the January 27, 2014 Utility Board meeting, staff reported its findings regarding viable
options for foam recycling in the City of Azusa.
The two possible options considered were a municipal drop-off program and one-day collection
event in partnership with Dart Container Corporation, the leading manufacturer of Foam #6
products. After careful evaluation, staff recommended to host a one-day collection event
sometime in the summer in order to assess the interest and need of foam recycling in the City
before considering/committing to a permanent facility.
Staff has coordinated with Dart for a one-day foam collection event to be held on Saturday,
September 20,2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Azusa Light & Water parking lot.
Dart will send a collection truck to pick-up minimally contaminated, separated and bagged
polystyrene food service and packaging products with#6 recycling symbol, and then take it to its
Corona facility for recycling. They will also set-up a table to showcase their products and
educate people about recycling foam.
Additionally, an electronic waste collection event will be held concurrently with the foam
collection in order to take advantage of collecting foam packaging from electronics purchased
for the new school year and to collect old or obsolete electronics.
Our present thinking is that both events will be open to Azusa Light & Water residential
customers (including Covina, West Covina, Irwindale, and Glendora) and business customers
within the City of Azusa only. Participating Azusa residents will be given ticket(s) for a chance
to participate in the raffle draw depending on the amount of foam products or electronics brought
for recycling. The event will be advertised via bill insert, newspaper, LED message boards, and
online from June-September.
Staff welcomes any suggestions from the Utility Board.
