E-5
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
VIA: SERGIO GONZALEZ, CITY MANAGER
FROM: MIKI CARPENTER, DIRECTOR OF RECREATION AND FAMILY SERVICES
DATE: MARCH 4, 2019
SUBJECT: AUTHORIZATION TO PURCHASE AND INSTALLATION OF (2) POOL HEATERS
FOR THE JAMES SLAUSON AQUATICS CENTER
BACKGROUND:
The James Slauson Park and Aquatics Center, located at 501 E 5th Street, was constructed in 1994.
Two of the children’s pool heaters at the Aquatics Center are 26 years old and are nonoperational.
Estimates were received from three (3) vendors and Commercial Aquatics Services, had a low bid at
$36,563.30. The Department of Recreation and Family Services has been awarded funds from the Los
Angeles County, Regional Park and Open Space District, which could be utilized for this purpose to
entirely fund this project.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the City Council take the following action:
1)Authorize the purchase and installation of (2) Raypak MVB heaters by Commercial Aquatics
Services in the amount of $36,563.30.
ANALYSIS:
The current heaters for the children’s and slide pools at the Aquatics Center are over 26 years old and
have begun to fail. The purchase and installation of two (2) new energy efficient Raypak MVB heaters
will allow these pools to once again become heated and, will conserve more energy than previous
heaters. If approved, work will be done during the spring of 2019, prior to the pool opening this summer.
APPROVED
CITY COUNCIL
3/4/2019
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no general fund fiscal impact as a grant has been received from the Los Angeles County
Regional Park and Open Space District. These funds are held in in account# 28-25-1410-101-6493.
