"- DATE: SEPTEMBER 25, 2017 SUBJECT: PUBLIC POWER WEEK: OCTOBER 1-7,2017 SUMMARY: Each year in October, more than 2,000 public utilities from around the nation celebrate Public Power Week to extol the virtues of public ownership of their electric utilities which serve approximately 47 million Americans. This annual/national event is sponsored by the American Public Power Association in Washington, D.C. The proposed action approves the proclamation of October 1-7 as Public Power Week to celebrate Azusa Light & Water's year-round service to the City of Azusa. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the Utility Board approve the following action: 1) Approve Proclamation recognizing Public Power Week on October 1-7. BACKGROUND: This year, the Utility Board is being requested to pass a Proclamation of Public Power Week proclaiming October 1-7 as a week-long recognition of the benefits of being a public power utility in the form of higher customer service and reliable,efficient and lower electricity rates. The City of Azusa's ownership of its electric utility has resulted in a significant public benefit to its residents and businesses. The local governance by the Utility Board continues to be an important aspect in leading Azusa to make it a better place in which to live and work, as well as protecting the global environment. ALW also acknowledges the efforts of many Light &Water employees and power line workers who often work diligently in the background over the years to ensure continuous service ar provide fast response when problems do arise. These concerted efforts have earned ALW tl RP3 designation, one of 82 in the nation of more than 2000 public power utilities,recognizing as one of the most reliable electric providers in the industry. UB-2 Public Power Week September 25, 2017 Page 2 Literature and energy efficiency giveaways will be handed out to walk-in residents at ALW Customer Service lobby during the week. Public information campaign for this event will be done via street banner,website, and social media. FISCAL IMPACT: Costs incurred for promotional materials will amount to less than $2,000. NOW,THEREFORE,the City Council of the City of Azusa unites to proclaim October 1-7,2017 as "Public Power Week" in the City of Azusa; further, we commend Azusa Light & Water for its contributions to the community in providing low-cost, safe,reliable electricity to community homes and businesses just as it has since 1904, the year when the utility was created to serve all the citizens of Azusa.
