Your family and friends are interested in you. You will want to let them know you are looking for a job. The main thing is to do this in a positive way. Don't just ask if anyone knows about an opening, but mention your abilities and the type of job you would like to find. It is not taking advantage of friends to ask their advice in a job hunt. They may know of someone or some company that needs a person with just your qualifications. If they do, it's to the employer's advantage to hire one personally recommended. Your school or college placement office would be one of the first sources of information about possible jobs. Even if you have been out of school for a while, you can get help here. Watch the classified advertisements in newspapers, not only for specific opendings, but for clues to current labor shortages and to learn the prevailing wages or salaries for the work you want. Profes- sional journals and business papers also often carry classified ads of jobs available in their fields. You may even want to run an ad of your own. Once you have an idea of the kind of company you would like to work for, cpmpile a list of individual firms by using your classified telephone directory, or specialized directories for that particular field. You would then apply directly to the companies' personnel offices for appointments for interviews. Your state employment service is an agency that offers free job placement, and in many cases, gives vocational testing and advice. In large cities the statem employment service has a number of offices, somethmes different ones for different types of jobs. You will find them listed in the telephone book under the Depart- ment of Labor of your state.
