AGENDA ITEM
TO: Honorable Chair and Members of the Personnel Board
FROM: Bob Garcia, Police Captain V
VIA: Cathy Hanson, Director of Human Resources C,*"
DATE: May 1 1, 2004
SUBJECT: Request for Police Officer Trainee, Lateral Police Officer, and Police Officer
Academy Recruitment to be Commenced
The City Council approved the acceptance of a federal grant which enables Azusa to hire
four more full time sworn police officers. Additionally, we anticipate at least two current
full time police Corporals retiring in the first quarter of F/Y 04/05. This will create five
immediate openings. Because of the lengthy hiring, testing and background process to
actually hire sworn officers, I recommend we commence the above recruitments
simultaneously in order for us to have maximum flexibility to select the best possible
candidates for these positions. It is also known that it takes up to a full year before a
newly hired police officer is truly capable of handling the responsibilities of the job by
themselves.
Both of the two anticipated retirements are Corporals. One of the positions will be lost
due to budget reductions. The other position will require a promotional process to fill it.
Our intent is to promote from with the organization.
