A regular meeting of the Personnel Board was called to order at 7:18 p.m. in the West Wing Conference Room by Frank
Allen, Chair.

POLICE CORPORAL
DEFINITION
Under administrative direction, acts a Beat Officer, Field Training Officer (FTO), Field Supervisor,Detective,or
Watch Commander as designated by police management; is required to perform sworn law enforcement
work in an assigned functional area and may perform sensitive investigations and special administrative
assignments as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Provides full range of law enforcement services to the community, serves as Field Supervisor or Watch
Commander in the absence of a Police Sergeant or as designated by police management; Makes sound
decisions and accurate judgments in all work situations.
Provides technical and supervisory support to Police Officers and non-sworn personnel; trains new Officers
in areas such as traffic enforcement , safety, report writing and department administrative policies and
procedures.
Works cooperatively with police managers and other city departments to achieve city and departmental
goals.
Investigates all aspects of major crimes, traffic accidents and homicide cases.
Performs patrol duties in radio-equipped unit; answers calls for the protection of life and property;enforces
City, County and State laws; pursues, apprehends and makes arrests as necessary.
Assists in the performance of special investigative and crime prevention duties as required.
Performs searches and transports prisoners; interviews victims, complainants and witnesses; interrogates
suspects; gathers and preserves evidence; appears and testifies credibly in court on and off duty as the
arresting Officer; presents evidence; prepares well-written reports on arrests,traffic violations, impounded
property and other case reports.
Directs traffic in emergency or congested situations and events; restores order and maintains peace at public
gatherings or in conflict situations.
Maintains contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserves good
relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties, including the general public.
Conducts safety education and provides crime prevention duties as required; Administers emergency first aid
to injured or incapacitated persons until medical personnel are present; and, attends and participates in
training sessions as assigned and required.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES
Education and/or Experience
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities
necessary for satisfactory job performance. Example combinations include but are not limited to three
(3)years experience as a Police Officer in a law enforcement agency with one (1)year of service as an
Azusa Police Office and a minimum of 45 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) in Police Science,
Administration of Justice or related field. An Associate degree is highly desired.
Knowledge, Skill and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of modern law enforcement including patrol investigations, and special operations
functions; laws, regulations, and policies regarding search, seizure, arrest, evidence, and court
procedures, as well as legal rights of citizens and prisoners; Vehicle and Penal Codes; public relations
techniques; report writing skills. Working knowledge of municipal organization and administration;
physical layout of the City and adjoining areas; methods and techniques of supervision.
Ability to observe accurately and remember faces, numbers, incidents and places; use and care for
equipment; think and act quickly i n emergencies and judge situations and people accurately; maintain
alertness and concentration in emergency situations; correctly operate police equipment and correct use
of tools in the performance of duties; assess and develop training needs of assigned personnel; learn,
read, understand and interpret laws and local ordinances, regulations and City ordinances and codes;
work under variable weather conditions; perform all physical tasks required for sworn law enforcement
personnel; follow and adhere to safety rules and regulations; read and interpret maps; complete clear
and accurate police reports and work activity records; communicate clearly and concisely in conveying
commands; understand and carry out both verbal and written directives; ensure compliance with and
effectively disseminate departmental policy and procedure information; resolve conflicts or problematic
situations; maintain discipline and initiate corrective action; ensure compliance with safety practices and
policies; ability to perform other related duties as required.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of a valid Class C California driver=s license and an acceptable driving record. An incumbent
must maintain an acceptable driving record during the course of employment in the position.
Must possess POST Basic Certificate and completion of California P.O.S.T. approved police academy.
