The proposed changes reflect the two areas of specialty of these positions: • Recreation Superintendent—Operations and Parks • Recreation Superintendent— Programs and Services The approval of these recommended changes will provide a more accurate reflection of actual areas of responsibility and provide consistency of experience and requirements. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Plans, directs, coordinates, and evaluates any potential combination of City-wide recreation and senior services programs involving youth and adult sports activities, aquatics, special events and childcare activities conducted at various facilities. Plans, directs, coordinates, and reviews the work plan for the Recreation and Family Services Department; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems; assign work activities, projects, and programs; monitor work flow, review and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: This FLSA exempt class reports to the Associate Director of Recreation and Parks and manages a division directly and through subordinate crew supervisory staff. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: These functions may not be present in all positions in this class. Manages, supervises and coordinates goals and objectives as well as policies and procedures necessary to provide assigned Division services; develop new or modified systems, policies and procedures; researches landscape area and recreation facility construction and maintenance problems and prepares a variety of comprehensive reports. Manages and supervises landscaped area acquisition, construction and maintenance in City parks, street medians and around City buildings; ensures appropriate use of equipment, materials and methods; maintains assigned facilities according to City standards. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;research and prepare complex reports on a variety of subjects; establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with the community at large, the City Council, and other public officials; represent the City in a variety of meetings. Establish general policies,procedures,and guidelines to be observed by department staff;make decisions regarding operational and personnel functions; understand, explain and apply policies and procedures; resolve department related citizen complaints or problems concerning activities with diplomacy and tact that cannot be handled by subordinates; deal constructively with conflict and develop effective resolutions; analyze unusual situations and resolve them through application of management principles and practices; identify methods to maximize service effectiveness and efficiency; meet the physical requirements established by the City; knowledge of computer hardware and software;ability to use word processing and data base software. Ability to perform heavy manual labor as needed.
