AGENDA ITEM
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
FROM: BOB GARCIA, ACTING CHIEF OF POLICE
VIA: F.M. DELACH, CITY MANAGER : 4o
DATE: JULY 5, 2005
SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF APPLICATION TO THE EDWARD BYRNE JUSTICE
ASSISTANCE GRANT PROGRAM (JAG, FORMERLY LLEBG)
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council approve the application to the Edward Byrne
Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program in the amount of $21,951.
BACKGROUND
Annually, the police department applies for federal funding under a formula block
grant. The amount awarded to each city must be expended in one of several
`purpose areas.' Each year we have met with successful results and have generally
allocated the funds toward technology.
In order to be eligible for this grant, the City must present the application in a public
setting in order to provide the public with the ability to comment. The recommended
action meets this requirement.
If and when the funds are received, the Police Department Operating Budget for fiscal
year 2006 will be amended at that time. The proposed funds are to be used for the
purchase of ruggedized computer equipment in the vehicles. The existing MDCs are
nearing the end of their lifecycle. To assist the City in the purchase of these units and
their installation, we will utilize the JAG funds to outfit two additional patrol vehicles
with the appropriate computer including all associated hardware, software and
installation.

FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact as a result of submitting this grant application. Approval of
the grant will provide the Police Department with an additional $21,951 for its FY2006
Operating Budget.
