AGENDA ITEM
TO: THE HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
FROM: RANDY NORIEGA, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF RECREATION
VIA: RICK COLE, CITY MANAGER,'6-
DATE:
DATE: OCTOBER 15, 2001
SUBJECT: RENAMING CITY PARK
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the resolution renaming "City Park" to "Veteran's Freedom Park".
BACKGROUND:
At the initiative of Associate Director Randy Noriega and with approval of the Parks and
Recreation Commission by unanimous vote the City Council is requested to approve the
renaming of "City Park" to "Veteran's Freedom Park".
The reasons for the renaming of the park are:
• In my research I have found that City Park has never had an "official" dedicated park name.
It has been called City Park only because it's located behind City Hall.
• City Hall has been the site of many new Veteran's monuments over the recent years. The
Veteran's Memorial, the Veteran's Brick-Name Memorial, and the Veteran's"Freedom is Not
Free" Memorial are symbols of the City's respect for our armed service Veterans.
• The official renaming of the park behind City Hall to Veteran's Freedom Park would be another
monument to the heroic men and women who have served our country in the armed
services.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Two concrete park signs should be purchased and installed at the park to match the other parks
in our park system. Additional street signs should be purchased and installed to direct visitors
to the park's location. It is estimated that these signs will cost $6,800.00.
