RECOMMENDATION
Again approve and proclaim April 20,2000,as Arbor Day in the City of Azusa. Arbor
Day commemoration will take place on April 20, 2000, at 5:30 p.m. at Slauson Park
with a tree planting ceremony.
BACKGROUND
On March 8, 1999, the Azusa City Council proclaimed the third Thursday of April of
each year the City of Azusa's official Arbor Day.
SUMMARY
The 2000 Arbor Day commemoration will be scheduled for April 20, 2000, at 5:30
p.m. at Slauson Park.
The 2000 ceremony will be a specially challenging ceremony. The Recreation and
Parks Department will be planting a special tree in memory of Fernando Vega,the
nine year old child that was lost to us in the accidental drowning at Slauson Pool.
This special tree planting is designed to help further heal the emotional scars left
by this tragedy.
FISCAL IMPACT
Solicitation is ongoing to secure a healthy tree for the Arbor Day tree planting. The
fiscal impact will be less than $250.00.

WHEREAS, In 1872 J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture
that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees, and
WHEREAS, This holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more
than a million trees in Nebraska, and
WHEREAS, Trees can reduce the erosion of our precious top soil by wind and water, cut
heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce
oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife, and
WHEREAS, Trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our
fires and countless other wood products, and
WHEREAS, Trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of
business areas, and beautify our community, and
WHEREAS, The City of Azusa recognizes the National Arbor Day foundation Tree City
U.S.A.
NOW THEREFORE, The City Council of the City of Azusa does hereby proclaim April 20,
2000 as
ARBOR DAY
in the City of Azusa, and urges all citizens to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands and
to support our City's urban forestry program.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, we have hereunto set our hands and caused the Seal of the City of
Azusa to be affixed this Third day of April, Two Thousand.
