COLEMAN, ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR VIA: F. M. DELACH, CITY MANAGER/1 DATE: DECEMBER 19, 2005 SUBJECT: BUILDING DIVISION BUDGET REVISION RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that City Council: Receive and File this report. BACKGROUND Building costs for plan check and inspection consultants are projected to exceed their budgeted amount by approximately $70,000 based on projected activity through the remainder of the fiscal year. An increased number of owner-builder single family home remodels which are more labor- intensive for Building Division staff; the need for key staff to spend more time in Rosedale pre- construction and redevelopment project meetings; building inspector vacation coverage; and an increase in two-story residential developments which require additional engineering expertise have all led to costs exceeding projections. Pursuant to the authority granted by the Municipal Code, the City Manager has authorized a transfer from salary savings into plan check/inspection contract services of $70,000 increasing them from $58,200 to $128,200, using salary savings created by an unfilled budgeted building inspector position. The need for the building inspector position will be reconsidered as part of the budget process and based upon a review of the organizational structure of the Community Development Department. FISCAL IMPACT There is no increase to the overall budget proposed as part of this action.
