CITY COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM
MEMORANDUM
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers
FROM: Margaret Hall,Economic Development Specialist
VIA: Henry Garcia,City Administrator
DATE: April 17, 1995
SUBJECT: 1996 Tournament of Roses Parade Float Entry
BACKGROUND
The Tournament of Roses Parade Association has invited Azusa to the 1996 Tournament of Roses
Parade. This is our first invitation to participate in the parade. This is an excellent opportunity to
enhance the City's image,involve the community,the youth,and encourage civic pride. This year's
theme is"Kids, Laughter, and Dreams."
Community support in this project is critical. To understand such support, we put a notice in the
City's,the Chamber of Commerce's and the Police Department's newsletters. We also sent letters
to service and community organizations asking their opinion. The Chamber has received many
telephone calls in support of an Azusa float entry. We have also received great support from
community organizations.
This project is proposed as a community-sponsored program. We estimate the cost of a float to be
$75,000. Fund raising ideas include: seeking donations, selling chocolate bars,pins,t-shirts, etc.,
and organizing a"Walk through Azusa-San Gabriel River."
/
Before pursuing any of these fund-raising ideas, we are asking for the City Council's support. G
Leadership from the Council is essential for a successful campaign. Without the City Council's \'1
support on this project,we will not proceed. Community participation is critical in this endeavor,

without the Council's leadership, it would be difficult to get all organizations involved.
In not participating at this time, Azusa risks losing the goodwill of the Tournament of Roses
Association. They believe that they extend formal invitations only to those organizations who will
participate. And that once the invitation is extended, its a"given"that the organization will join the
parade. However, in not participating now, it does not mean that Azusa will not be invited to
participate in future parades.
This is a great opportunity for Azusa. The Rose Parade is seen by an estimated U.S. domestic
audience of 100 million people and an estimated international viewership of more than 325 million
in over 90 countries. It is also an opportunity for our community to work together to promote the
Azusa community.
RECOMMENDATION
That the City Council support staff and community efforts to promote and raise funds to enter a float
in the 1996 Tournament of Roses Parade.
Respectfully submitted,
