HomeMy WebLinkAboutD-3 Staff Report - Age friendly Communities networkTO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
VIA: SERGIO GONZALEZ, CITY MANAGER
SCHEDULED ITEM
D-3
FROM: MIKI CARPENTER, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY RESOURCES
DATE: AUGUST 19, 2019
SUBJECT: APPLICATION TO JOIN NETWORK OF AGE-FRIENDLY COMMUNITIES
BACKGROUND:
The AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities is an affiliate of the World Health Organization’s
Age-Friendly Cities and Communities Program, an international effort launched in 2006. The program has
participating communities in more than 20 nations, as well as 10 affiliates representing more than 1,000
communities.
The AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities encourages states, cities, towns and
counties to prepare for the rapid aging of the U.S. population by paying increased attention to the
environmental, economic and social factors that influence the health and well-being of older adults. By
doing so, these communities are better equipped to become great places, and even lifelong homes, for
people of all ages.
Membership is not an endorsement of AARP, but just means is that a community's elected leadership has
made the commitment to actively work toward making their town, city or county a great place for people
of all ages.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends that the City Council take the following actions:
1)Review the Age-Friendly Network enrollment process,
2)Authorize staff to complete the application to join the network of Age-Friendly Communities, and
3)Authorize the City Manager to sign the commitment letter to join the Age Friendly Network, on
behalf of the Mayor and Council.
APPROVED
CITY COUNCIL

ANALYSIS:
The AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities all commit to a goal of creating livable communities making
for happier, healthier residents of every age, in all life stages. There are eight domains of livability
including the following, which the City of Azusa already has committed to in various form:
• Transportation (Dial-A-Ride)
• Social Participation (Senior Center Activities)
• Respect and Social Inclusion (Senior Center Activities)
• Civic Participation and Employment (Senior Advisory Board, Volunteer Opportunities, Referrals)
• Communication and Information (Newsletters, Website, Social Media)
• Community Support and Health Services (Social Services, Referral Systems)
• Outdoor Spaces and Buildings (Parks, Walking Paths, Benches)
• Housing (Senior Friendly Housing and/or Support Services to Locate)
Because the City of Azusa is already supporting services, activities and/or environments that support these
eight domains of livability, and existing and developing plans are underway in these domains, the City is
eligible to apply to become part of the Age-Friendly Network. The application provides the opportunity to
share what is already happening in the City and what is planned such as the Pedestrian Master Plan and
other assessment and program activities that support this framework.
This is an international effort, however locally there are a limited number of Cities and Counties
participating in southern California. Nearby, the Cities of Anaheim, Glendale, Culver City, West
Hollywood, Hermosa Beach, Long Beach and Los Angeles, are current members. The County of Los
Angeles has also joined the Network. Azusa would be the first city in the San Gabriel Valley to be part of
the Age-Friendly Network.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact associated with the recommended actions.
