AGENDA ITEM
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF ' jE CITY COUNCIL
FROM: GEOFF CRAIG, DIRECTOR OF FINANC J4001"
DATE: JUNE 29, 1988
SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR EXTENSION OF "GOING-OUT-OF- BUSINESS"
SALE FOR SAV-ON FURNITURE
Background
A request has been received from Sav-On Furniture for an exten-
sion of its "Going-Out-of-Business Sale" with its signage and
outdoors display of merchandise. This report recommends that
Council deny the request.
Findings
On December 21, 1987, the City Council approved a request for a
"Going-Out-of-Business Sale" for Sav-On Furniture, 100 West Foot-
hill Boulevard. The applicant, Mr. Tom Lu, requested approval
for a sale that would run from January to April, however, on
staff's recommendation, Council granted only the customary 30-day
sale. The applicant was advised that he would be able to submit
a letter requesting a 30-day continuation.
It appears that Sav-On Furniture is still very much in business
with no indication of closure. There have been several
complaints about this and Council directed staff to investigate.
On June 20, the applicant was advised in writing that all of the
activities and signage of the sale must immediately cease and
desist and that failure to do so would necessitate issuance of a
citation.
On June 23, staff received a request from Sav-On Furniture for an
extension of the sale through the month of September. The appli-

cant, Mr. Young Dang, referred the City to his landlord, Mr.
DeRosa, in regards to the lease on the business property. Staff
contacted Mr. DeRosa and was informed that he would not permit
the lease to be broken before October 1.
Obviously, the idea of such a sale is to sell merchandise from
the floor in order to clear out existing stock. However, it has
been suggested that deliveries of new furniture are still being
made to this location. In light of this, Mr. DeRosa advised that
Sav-On Furniture had just closed another store and that its
inventory may have been transferred to Azusa for sale here.
Copies of all of the pertinent paperwork are attached. Staff
recommends denial, with the possibility of a second permit being
granted, upon receipt of application, for the month of September,
1988.
Recommendation
It is recommended that Council deny the request of Sav-On Furni-
ture to continue through the month of September its "Going-Out-
of-Business Sale" with the possibility of a permit being granted,
upon receipt of application, for the month of September, 1988.
