HomeMy WebLinkAboutD-2 Staff Report - 2020 City Council Summer Meeting ScheduledSCHEDULED ITEM D-2 TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL VIA: SERGIO GONZALEZ, CITY MANAGER FROM: JEFFREY LAWRENCE CORNEJO, JR., CITY CLERK ADRIAN GARCIA, MMC, CHIEF DEPUTY CITY CLERK DATE: APRIL 20, 2020 SUBJECT: DISCUSSION AND DIRECTION REGARDING 2020 SUMMER MEETING SCHEDULE BACKGROUND: From 2009-2015, it was the tradition of the City Council to not hold Council meetings in August. In 2016, the City Council modified the summer meeting schedule and decided to cancel the first regular meetings during the months of July, August and September. This was done in an effort to better manage the City’s business calendar and to avoid lengthy breaks between meetings. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the City Council take the following action: 1)Discuss and provide direction to Staff; ANALYSIS: It’s common for City Councils to modify summer meeting schedules. They provide Councilmembers and city staff an opportunity to take a vacation. Staff believes that scheduling one meeting per month during the summer would be sufficient to attend to the City’s business and should an emergency arise, a special meeting can be called. However, during the “Safer at Home” order, Council may wish to modify the regular meeting schedule which can include starting the summer meeting schedule earlier and hosting joint Utility Board meetings. As the city moves forward to set next year’s budget and address financial impacts, it may necessitate an additional meeting or two. FISCAL IMPACT: There is no fiscal impact associated with the recommended action.
