HomeMy WebLinkAboutC-1 Staff Report - HS Senior Yard Sign Staff ReportSCHEDULED ITEM C-1 TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL VIA: SERGIO GONZALEZ, CITY MANAGER DATE: APRIL 27, 2020 SUBJECT: CONSIDER PARTICIPATION IN A YARD SIGN PROGRAM TO RECOGNIZE GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS AND ALLOCATE APPROPRIATE FUNDS FOR PURCHASE AND INSTALLATION BACKGROUND: The Azusa Unified School District (AUSD) has closed all schools for the remainder of the academic year due to COVID-19. Students are working from home and the High School Graduation Ceremony has been cancelled. At the April 20, 2020 City Council meeting, Mayor Gonzales inquired if Council would be interested in participating in a program to recognize High School Seniors by purchasing and installing yard signs to recognize their achievement. By consensus, Council agreed to have the item brought back for consideration. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the City Council take the following actions: 1) Provide direction regarding participating in the High School Senior Recognition Program; and 2)Authorize expenditure of up to $4,000 to purchase banner(s) and/or yard signs and coordinate delivery and installation. ANALYSIS: In light of the global COVID-19 pandemic, high school seniors in Azusa will not have the ability to participate in a High School Graduation Ceremony. City Council has expressed an interest to support local high school seniors during these difficult times. Council has established a fund to provide donations for local worthy causes. In the past, they have included paying for bus transportation services for local sports teams and school bands. The City is in support of acknowledging Azusa high school graduates by displaying banners and yard sign(s) throughout the City to honor the graduates. The recommended action requests use of City funds to purchase banners and/or yard signs and coordinate delivery and installation.
