Foothill Blvd.,Suite 107, Azusa,CA 91702 Ph:626/969-7816 Fax:626/969-7854 e-mail:jrnhrea@flash.net To: Pat McDermott From: J. Michael Huls ' Date: December 22, 1 Subject: Azusa HHW Grant No. HDS-96-1786 It is with great pleasure that I am able to announce that Azusa's planned HHW facility is finally approved by the DTSC and the site sponsor, Advance Environmental Technol Systems(AETS), has already approved plans for construction and has identified Saturday,(anuary 17, 1998,/as the target initial collection date. Mr. Louis Pedroza, Azusa's Project Director, is away on vacation, but he asked me prior to leaving to summarize recent events and to submit a preliminary plan of public outreach and education to you. First, and as you are aware, the project has been stymied for some time by circumstances beyond the control of the project team. Circumstances cleared up quite rapidly this past month, and as of December 15, 1997, JMH was informed that an agreement was reached between AETS and the DTSC, and the City, so that the FU-IW facility could be established. A tentative schedule was developed and the first event will be held on January 17, 1998 as noted above. Thereafter, the facility will be open on a regular schedule. Mr. Pedroza requested that JMH immediately draft and develop the public education and outreach campaign as called for in the grant application. The initial step was to call an emergency meeting of the River Group and any other jurisdictions interested in participating in the program. This meeting has been set for Tuesday, December 30, 1997 at 2:00 pm at the City of Azusa City Hall Conference Room. The actual campaign calls for the development of the following items: press release, flyers, fact sheet, signage, banner, and posters. Each item is discussed below in terms of priority. The press release will be developed before December 30th and submitted for your approval. It will solely announce the opening of the facility, opening date, time, and location along with some additional information about what is accepted for disposal/recycling. Thefyer will be produced as an announcement to be given away to adjoining and participating cities that identifies the schedule, location, time of operation, and what is accepted. This likewise will be produced and submitted for your approval before December 30th. It is important to distribute this information as a minimum at Ieast two weeks in advance of the first event. The signage and banner are to be used to advertise locally the presence of the facility and to direct local traffic. They will be simple in design and legible from a significant distance. Reproductions of the signage and banner will be submitted to you around January 5, 1998. The posters are to be used in point of purchase advertising. They will need to be completed some time before January Dec-24-97 O2 : O1P J . Michael Huls 626/969-7854 P_ O3 • Memo to P. McDermott December 22, 1997 Page 2 31, 1998, and will be submitted to you by no later than January 10, 1998. The fact sheets will provide specific information about the facility, instruct patrons as to what materials are acceptable, and provide some additional information about HHW including HHW waste reduction. They likewise are important to the success of the campaign, but will not need to be finalized and printed prior to the end of January 1998. Azusa's hot line number will be identified as a local number to contact for further information. The fact sheets will be drafted by no later than January 10, 1998 and submitted for your approval. In summary, the flyers and press release are more critical in terms of timing than any of the other materials. We would appreciate your preliminary approval of this plan for these items that were identified in the original application on or before December 30, 1997. We plan to meet with the cities of the River Group at 2 pm on December 30th. I've enclosed a copy of the budget from the approval grant application for your convenience. eChemical Waste Management, Inc.
