Subject: Change Order#8 for Police Facility Addition and Alteration Project
Background
The plans and specifications for this project called for reusing the existing fire sprinkler system in the
police department with some modification and the fire department connection(FDC) accessible from
the alley. However, this approach was not acceptable by the Los Angeles County Fire Prevention
Bureau (sprinkler unit) and was in need of additional modification. The original quotes to the
contractor,the Hazama Corporation, could not include the additional modifications nor the number
of days required to complete this work.
Findings
Staff and project architects have had much dialogue with the Fire Prevention Bureau, which
culminated with a meeting of Department Heads. The most cost effective and reasonable approach
was to add an additional FDC in front of the station and leave the existing connection accessible from
the alley. This approach also requires expanding the fire sprinkler system in the police department to
include additional coverage, with the exception of the jail proper which is essentially a stand-alone
structure.
Recommendation
Staff recommends that pending the approval of LaSalle National Bank, Change Order#8 be approved
as attached in the amount of$49,479.
