Date: December 21, 1998 Recommendation Staff recommends that Council approve the rededication of the south wing (original 1969 police building) of the Police Facility to former Council Member and Mayor of Azusa, Louis G. Memmesheimer. Background The original police building began construction in 1969 and had an official grand opening on June 21, 1970. As a lasting memorial for his twenty-two years of civic service, the police facility was dedicated to former Council Member and Mayor of Azusa, Louis G. Memmesheimer,. The dedication highlight at the grand opening was the presentation of a framed photograph and a gold key to the new Louis G.Memmesheimer Memorial Police Facility to Mrs.Virginia Memmesheimer, widow of the late Mayor after whom the new police station was named. Making the presentation were Mayor Jens Solem and Police Chief Carl Elkins. The principal speaker for the occasion was U.S. Attorney Robert Meyer and the invocation was given by Reverend A.J. Duggan, pastor of St. Frances of Rome Church. The original 3'x2' plaque that dedicated the police facility and listed the dedicating council and project team, is in good repair. It is the intent of the Police Department to refurbish the original plaque and have it reinstalled on the original building(south wing). The reinstallment of the plaque will give the deserved and intended recognition of the original dedication. The location of the plaque will ensure that all visitors to the remodeled police department can appreciate its history. The new main entry point of the police complex has the "Azusa Police Department" prominently displayed above the archway to provide clear identification of the building to the public and others. Such clear identification of City Buildings has been a concern of the City's Customer Servi e Committee since 1995. * * * Cirl)0)-11(#n ,y-/z Phone #(626)812-3200 • 725 North Alameda Avenue,Azusa, California 91702-2504 • FAX#(626)812-9308 / '4-- / h7Lj Fiscal Impact The refurbishment of the original plaque has not been finalized, but is expected to be nominal, and paid for from the Police Construction Project funds and not the General Fund.
